Whats this Blue Ray disc thing. Its not going to mess up DVD`s is it????
Hi just read a letter on teletext mentioning concerns over something called the Blue Ray disc being the next big thing.
Oh hells bells thats all we need something tripping up the greatness that is dvd,
Anyone got any info and do you think DVd is here to stay, Hope so.
Also are they playable on existing players or vice versa, our discs on them.
Worried DVd nut needs some reasurance as just about to order a good few DVD`s I`ve been saving up for!!!!!!!!
All the best, hopefully, Mark.

If Blue Ray does become the standard in 5-7 years time, they`ll make it able to play DVD for sure, just as all DVD players can play CDs. And if they do bring out film on the blue ray format, I won`t replace my collection. It`ll cost too much and the differnce won`t be worth it, you can get fantastic pictures already on a DVD. So I don`t think it`s a good way to spent my money.

Just had a scoot about via google and it looks like they may land as early as next year.
existing DVD players and CD players won`t play them but need to find an article yet which says if the new blue ray machines will play the DVd format.
Wouldn`t be bad if they do and the recordable disc business is all brought together with one universal disc, keep your old DVd`s and buy more DVD`s cheap or Blue discs a bit more cost.
they are definately to be the same size disc I think.
Will go see if I can find out if blue machines will play our beloved DVD`s, anyone know????
Best Mark.
PS it does look as if they are going for this in a big way, the blue laser jobs hold more info and shed it quicker apparently.

Just a quick update as found an article said it is possible to make the blue laser players "BACKWARDS COMPATABLE" thats our beloved ( what old fashioned) DVD`s but it will be up to individual manufacturers to decide if they want to!!!!!! Should be flippin compulsory.!!!
Whats that all about then??? Any thoughts anyone???
Best Mark.

Yeah... and with this one, all of the manufacturers have decided on a standard spec for the recorder too. So we should actually start to see recording units fairly quickly.
I want to see the terabyte disc that is being developed. Might not get used for DVD stuffs, but I would kill to get one for the PC.

There`s no gurantee that blu-ray players will be able to play current dvds - it`s up to each manufacturer to decide if it`s worth it. Blu-ray discs are held in a caddy to avoid damage to the surface, so there will be physical incompatibilities to address.

Except Toshiba as they seem to be thinking of us existing DVD customers/collectors. Mark.

Toshiba aren`t one of the blu-ray manufacturers...
"...Conspicuously absent from the Blu-ray roster is DVD Forum leader and DVD format pioneer Toshiba Corp., ..." from http://www.planetanalog.com/news/OEG20020222S0020
"... One company conspicuously absent is Toshiba ..." from http://www.videobusiness.com/news/030102_bluray_prospects.asp
"[Toshiba] ... steers clear of Blu-ray" from http://www.toshiba-europe.com/newswire/index.asp
etc.

> There`s no gurantee that blu-ray players will be able to play current dvds
It should be quite easy for standard dvd support to be added to Blu-Ray players via the use of dual lasers (some current players have dual lasers, one for CD the other for DVD) as the only reason DVDs can`t be played on the Blu-Ray prototypes is because Blu-Ray uses blue-violet lasers which can`t see a DVD.
Support is likely to added for financial reasons as well, because they wouldn`t be able to ship many players that were no backwards compatable.
> I want to see the terabyte disc that is being developed
Unlikely as a DVD format, because it was developed by an independant company and so the DVD Group wouldn`t want anymore members who would take a percentage of patent royalties.
The terabyte disc (C3D) might get released as a mass data storage device, more likely in the card for as it can`t be damaged as easily as disc form.

Toshiba created DVD-RAM technology, the discs only work in DVD-RAM drives.
For now Blu-Ray is just being aimed at the re-writable market (due to the mess that is the DVD re-writable market) thats why the sample Blu-Ray discs are cartridge based.
