Dog Flea Treatment - how much and how often?

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 10th May 2011, 06:58

For the last few years we have been purchasing flea treatment for our dog from our vet at a cost of £35 for 3 months (Advocate). Looking on the internet this seems expensive and can be had for less than that on specialist websites but this particular product appears to need a prescription from the vet which will no doubt come at a cost.
Therefore, has anyone ever used Frontline or Fibrospot? These two seem to be the other products on the market which are cheaper and don`t need to be applied as often but I am not sure how effective they are? I have been told previously to steer clear of the Doc Martin products you can get in the supermarkets as they are useless.

Just for the record, my dog doesn`t have fleas, this is about prevention and not cure.

We use Frontline, it`s very good, pretty sure it recommends using once/month but we tend to use it when fleas are first detected/suspected then again 6 weeks or so later.

Have used PetMeds a few time, good prices and fast delivery.

All the best

Gerald.

Pretty sure I`ve used both over the years. I don`t bother most of the time, but I do check for signs of fleas and if I suspect them then I use it, and probably again a month later (as Superted suggested).

I have a *very* fluffy dog, who thankfully is cream so spotting flea poo is easy enough. But I`m sure if a product lasts for a month before you have to use it again, then it probably lasts for much longer at an ever decreasing rate of effectiveness. Much like if you get your dog`s booster one week later, it isn`t the end of the world.

That PetMeds link is handy, cheers!

Yeah, but Poppy would just fire off a mail somewhere saying how "the Man" is neglecting her and she keeps having to licknigs her wounds... probably ending up with tons of freebies ;)

Actually.. that`s a point.. with that many followers surely it`s gotta be worth your while getting her some sponsorship from a Pet products company? ;)

Frontline.
Price depends on the size of the hound. Application is every 6 weeks I think.
It`s worth doing it during spring summer whether you see fleas or not as once you see one there`s loads.

We use a flea shampoo as well, just a cheapo one from the local pet store. You don`t necessarlily have to but we figure if he`s getting washed it may as well have some kind of flea treatment in it.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

As relatively new dog owners we didn`t really know what to get, but in the end we plumped for some pikey variant of Frontline from the pet store across the road. Think it needs to be done once every six weeks and it came with three doses. Stopped out dog biting her arse almost immediately and I haven`t seen any fleas in the house (although the Mrs swears she saw one). We also bought one of those super vacuums designed to deal with pet hair because she malts like you wouldn`t believe. Good thing she has personality. Personality goes a long way.

Anyone else itchy after reading this thread?

Treat the hound then leave him/her out all day, half dead flea`s will bail from the dog and still bite like ****ers! Oh and be sure to get the gear that kills the flea`s and not just repel them or you`ll find you and the family becomes dinner!

I hate them with a passion!
