Any washing machine repair gurus out there?

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 13th January 2011, 08:25

My washing machine is a bit poorly. It was a hand me down from my parents 4 years ago so it is probably coming up to about 10-15 years old I would suspect but he is a little warhorse and battles on.
The other day we had a bit of a leak from him which we only noticed after the cycle had finished. I pulled the machine out and noticed that the cold water input pipe was leaking a bit (only a steady drip) so I pinched up the tube, monitored it for 2 hours and when happy it was solved pushed the machine back in.
Two days later after another cycle finished I noticed more water coming out, this time it originated from a slow drip coming from the bottom of the door of the mashine (only enough to make a pool about an inch or so wide). When the cycle finished I opened the door, checked the seal and wiped it all around and put another load in to try again.
This time there was no water coming from the door but from underneath the machine. I pulled the machine out and checked my repair job from 2 days earlier which was all fine but from the evidence on the floor the leak appears to be coming from the centre of the machine and dripping down.
I tilted the machine on its edge 45 degrees and had a little looksie underneath and noticed another steady drip coming from what appears to be a plastic basin type thing directly underneath the drum which funnels into what appears to be the waste pipe. The drip is comign from the connection between these two things. I took a pic but thanks to my works internet settings I can`t get on a hosting site sorry.

I did a quick google for "limescale washing machine" wondering if part of the problem has been caused by the build up of it in the pipes...

And I found this site, is it any help? Looks worth a read anyway.

Might also be worth checking the lint/coin trap "filter" thing on the bottom front, usually.
If it`s an older Hotpoint it had a self cleaning sump so there isn`t one, but on most machines it`s either behind a little door flap or it`s a screw off circular plug about 3 to 4 inches wide, unscrew it and check it`s clear.
Make sure you have something below it to catch the water that will come out though.

Generally leaks from the front of the drum/door area if the seal isn`t burst are caused by overloading the machine itself.

Always helps to know the make and model.  Goes for anything from washing machines to nuclear submarines.

Thanks guys. Kinda sorted it now, was a leak from where I said and the seal appears to have shrunk. Can`t find a replacement O-ring though of the same size so I have used plumbing tape to make the existing o-ring a little larger and its done the trick. I fear this is only a temporary solution though but I have also noticed the brushes need changing on the motor too so its gonna be apart again sometime soon

Careful, those things are horrendously dangerous when they go wrong. Things blow up, people die!

Ointment usually sorts out any problems I have with my O-ring.
