The Forums Help and Useful Information Thread

RJS (undefined) posted this on Friday, 24th September 2010, 12:16

This will eventually be a collection of useful information and links to threads on getting the most out of the MyReviewer forums.

I want the scrollbar back!
There are two layouts and two colour themes for the MyReviewer site. The blue theme and desktop layout are the defaults. However if you find scrollbars have gone AWOL then somehow you've ended up in the tablet version, designed with touch devices in mind.

The tablet version of MyReviewer site doesn't use scroll bars, you can use the up/down buttons that appear around content, along with your mouse wheel, touch dragging where available, up/down/home/end/page up/page down buttons on your keyboard, or dragging with the middle mouse button.

You can switch between layouts and themes by clicking on the Gear/Cog icon at the top right of the website next to the search box.

How do I Quote other people`s text?
The easiest way is when you are already replying to someone`s post. Just highlight the part of their message you wish to quote and a blue quote box will pop up with the text you highlighted and a link to quote it. Clicking on that link will insert the quote automatically into your reply box.

I can't see other people's text behind the message window!
Double click any light blue area of the window, double tapping works on tablets, and the window will shrink up. Do it again to make it shrink down. You can also drag and move it around too.

What links are acceptable in signatures?
Advertising of any sort is strictly prohibited. This includes family businesses, mates websites, if it is there for the purposes of generating income of any sort, it is NOT PERMITTED.

Are affiliate links allowed?
No. If you are including links for products on other websites and they feature an affiliate link, then remove the affiliate link. It`s that simple, just don`t do it.

How do I Link to a YouTube Video?
A number of ways should work, the easiest is to paste the full YouTube URL into your message. You don`t need to make it a proper link, but it doesn`t matter if you accidentally do. [youtube] tags also work around just the correct part of the embedding code, but there is no benefit to using these really, so no need to make more work for yourself.

Is There a Mobile Version of this Website?
Yes, as of March 2011 we now have a special mobile version of this website. If you visit the forums section of either MyReviewer you will automatically be offered a redirect to the mobile site if you are using a web browser with a small screen. iPad users are not currently redirected.

General Discussions on Site Layout
If you have a problem or a suggestion regarding the layout of the forums, post it to the following thread rather than creating a new one:

I like the idea behind the News ticker, specifically the opening of discussion threads for it...

Updated to include information about affiliate links and links to company sites in signatures. I will be going through various offender`s posts over the next few days and removing as many as I can find.

What`s the syntax to quote a specific person from a previous page?  The automatic quoting doesn`t work.
EDIT: sorted.
It`s:
bollocks.
I can do it but can`t get it to appear here. Even though I`m putting in CODE tags it`s using what I type. Still, I know now. Up to you RJS.

It`s not code tags, it`s quote tags. What browser are you using which the quote thing doesn`t work on?

No, I know it`s quote tags.  The site doesn`t allow for automatically quoting from people from a previous page - you can only select text from the same page for the automated quoting to work.  afaik.
I was asking at first what the syntax was so it says for example sj says...blah blah as opposed to just the quote itself.
I did it but when I came back to add how to do it here I couldn`t.  I thought I would be able to put the syntax including the quote tags etc. in a code tag and it would then show what I actually typed - i.e the square brackets etc.  but it didn`t.
How can I actually type the tags without it actually `using` them?
