would this be classed as offside?

My knowledge of the offside rule isn`t extensive, but I`m pretty sure it`s something like~ 2 members of the opposing team must be closer to the goal than the attacking players before the ball is played forward.

In this case is the ball still `played forward`?

No, because there`s no pass involved.

Looks OK to me. The goalkeeper has clearly thrown the ball & the opposition player got to it first. Now the goalie collects Fifty thousand pounds from some Russian or far eastern football fixing syndicate. :D Here

the attacking player must attempt to pass the ball forward to start the offside sequence in motion this attacker is moving the ball backwards so the goal stands

On a related note, anyone remember when Henry got booked for something similar?

The key difference being the goalie in that case was throwing the ball to kick it, and it never hit the ground, so he was deemed to be still in posession.
