There was a lot in the media at the time about how dodgy the evidence against him was (and the supposed witness was paid $2m to co-operate), and that he had been granted an appeal and the preliminary hearings had all gone strongly in his favour. He was released after dropping his appeal; so it seems to me it was for the government to save face rather than let it go to appeal and him be exonerated.

I suspect we`ll never know if he was really guilty, and even if he is he wasn`t alone so most of those involved got away with it.

Long ago I read a piece in a broadsheet about how the bomb got onto the plane because the American secret service insisted it get through customs unchecked as they thought it was drugs.
