Ryno_Dod (Elite) posted this on Monday, 12th April 2010, 11:29

As you can see my vans discs are fcuked so i started to change them and now i`m stuck !!

have undone all i can yet still cant get disc off i know sometimes there are bolts inbetween the stud holes but could only find 1 raised fixing which i have removed so do i need a "puller" now i gave a couple of taps with mallet but nothing have also soaked it in wd40 overnight

i asked the main dealer mechanics and they assured me the large nut in the middle is just the driveshaft nut and does not nee to come off so i`m at a loss

oh its a s***roen dispatch of 1998 vintage (i know but it keeps running somehow)

ant help would be good thanks in advance

You might need to employ heat.
Then plentiful whacking with your FBH (feckin big hammer).
Sorry, I don`t think there`s much you can do other than heating it up.
That`s what a garage would do.

You say you`ve `tapped it with a mallet`
Have you tried actually WHACKING it with a damned big hammer???
Not as if you`ve to worry about damaging the old disc.
And unlikely you`ll damage anything else.

would a blow torch generate enough heat ?

a blow torch will defo break the seal and allow the disc to come off hopefully in one piece. The expansion and contracting of the heating process breaks the seal of rust grime and assorted crap....

Just remember not to do what I did once and get so ****ed off with it that you hit it so hard you knock it off the jack :( oppise

goodluck

Yes a blow torch would generate enough heat.
Once you remove the wheel nuts there is occasionally a small screw which holds the disc in place, once that`s removed the only thing holding it is scheitte and corrosion.

You`ll probably find it`s kinda semi-welded itself to the backplate with the crap build up, quite common for brake parts.
Before you start going in there with the blowtorch look around the whole area, the CV joint cover behind the disc is rubber and a right PIT tits to repair so be careful not to get the blowtorch near it ;)

You`ll find it`s stuck against the hub, the large nut for the driveshaft you`ve mentioned has a circle around it, this is usually the edge of where the disc meets the hub, heat around that area eithout too much towards the driveshaft nut itself.
Periodically give it a wellie with the mallet.

Hit it side to side as well as inside to out as all you want to do is literally break the seal between the bits of metal and it`ll fall off.

Also make sure if this is being done on the ground that it`s not on a jack without an axle stand as you could easily whack it off the jack and that you aren`t sitting right facing the disc as you knock it off.... a very hot piece of metal landing in yer chuckies is NOT a nice experience ;)

GL and shout if there`s owt else we can do... (except driving down to do the job for ya :p)

[edit} soz to the other replies above, I got distracted and was typing my reply from the reply to Bowf saying you had split the disc :D [editoff]

You forgot to mention that they have to be made of the softest aluminium known to man.  :)  Have changed a few discs before and not been able to put that back in properly.  It is only for location - and as we`ve seen it soon sticks to the mating surface... :)
