Page 1 of USB Record Players
General Forum
Apologies Mods if this is in the wrong forum, it`s just these guys are so knowledgeable
I`m thinking of getting one of those USB record players that allows you to transfer LP`s to the PC and then to disc/mp3. Has anyone used one, and are they worth buying?
TIA
Will
If you have a record player that works, then they`re not worth it. All you need is to connect the headphone socket on the stereo to the mic or line-in socket on the computer and record it with free software like Audacity.

I agree with XFG`s wise words.
In fact I have a USB record player here, with iPod dock that is just gathering dust...
If I hadnt already offered to lend it to someone i would have said you could have it.
where are you based? i am in Kent, if you want to borrow it to transfer your stuff over the weekend or something?
the above offer goes for more or less anyone.

Right, Ahll see ye when ye get here wi` it ;)
BTW, hoe ye don`t want me tae fork oot fur yer fare tae!
Back to the OP and yeah, if you have a turntable with a preamp out it`ll go through the line in on the PC. If you don`t have preamp built in you can buy them but that then takes you to the realms of pricing similar to a cheapo USB one.
I might have a JVC T/T in the loft, I`ll have a look later if you need one as IIRC it has a preamp and I never used it. You might need to do something to power it though as it plugged into the hifi I think.
I know I had two of them and I cut the plug and wired it to a normal 9v power thingy you get for games consoles n stuff.
If it`s there and you need it you can have it.. might even have a two phono to 3.5mm cable to fit the PC too somewhere... <goes off rummaging>
Lemme know ;)
(if you are dead set on a USB one get someone with a Costco card cos they do one quite cheap... or contact RS Sound n Light in Glasgow city centre... DJ shop in St Enoch`s square who had one a few weeks back around the £60 mark)

If you don`t have a pre amp but have a mixer hanging around that should also do it, with a record player of course.

I`ve been thinking of getting one, but last time I lokoed they were about £100, and didn`t seem worth it for something I`d use once.
Richer Sounds have an amp which has a phono stage for £60 ( I have a record player that with a midi system, but is separate) so I`ve thought of buying that, as it would be more useful in the long term.
However, I think it`s Lidl, or Aldi are doing a USB record player for £50 this Thursday, says it comes with Audacity :)
It did occur to me, if I bought one, I`d use it for a few days to transfer a few records, then get bored, lend it to some-one, who would do the same, then I`d just lend it out to ppl and never use it myself again.

its tooo big to post - but if you want to save some cash//
maybe a bit left field, but why not see how many of your albums are on Spotify and then record them with Audacity? :B
RE: USB Record Players
Maplin have one for £50. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=280937
If you have a turntable I am sure you can get a phono to usb converter box thingy that acts as a pre amp too for around £30.
