Should I find this insulting?
Found out today that in just over a week, a tracking device is going to be fitted to my truck. I`ve looked into the make of the device, and the website is all about squeezing every possible ounce of efficiency out of it`s `fleet` (i.e. 2 vehicles for this branch). I can only read this to mean that not only do we have our digital tacho cards spying on us for our hours, but now we`re going to have the third degree if we`re in the same place for too long doing our job.
I work my tits off for my particular company, and have done for some time. In this period of financial instability, especially in the building industry, The fact that companies are spending thousands of pounds on this technology, when a few months ago they were laying off staff in a bid to save costs p***es me off greatly. And to spend it on a spying device that, by its very installation, implies that I`m not doing the job I`m being paid to do?
How am I expected to react to this?

RE: Should I find this insulting?
I dunno, it`s kind of like at my work when managers ask to see internet logs for so and so because they think they`ve been on the internet too much.
To me, that seems like bad management, you should have some kind of idea what your staff are doing, and how long it should take, without needing our help to spy on people. As i said to my manager, or we going to have bags checked for newspapers/books etc, to make sure we`re not reading them when people aren`t looking as well?
So yes, it`s annoying but it seems like these days management don`t trust staff to do their job properly, and think spying is the solution :(
I find it strange that in our scenario, management is unhappy if some-one spends 45 minutes on the internet at lunch, rather than 30 mins, but is happy for me to waste time generating and creating reports, to give to the manager, who then wastes time looking at them, and asks me to explain what it all means anyway :(
I remember one person I worked with was suspected of abusing the internet, his manager asked him to keep a diary, and tell her each day what he had done all day! It wasn`t log after that he found another job and left.

I know what you mean had one in my truck now about 10 months or so,I also have a crane (lorry loader) fitted and it monitors when you are using the crane,if you have the engine idling and no activity, where you have been, where you are, when you stopped and for how long, used with your delivery sheets 15 drops should be 15 stops, I was told by the man who fitted mine that if they connect everything up to the device they can tell when you fart ho! ho!.Idling times are a bugbear with me just had one for 24 minutes trouble is the truck was 40miles away getting repaired (and I was in a hire vehicle) but as its the truck I drive its seen as me at fault.(They want zero idling time) though I have about 2 minutes every morning building air tanks up so I can get the brakes off.
I work for a builders merchant and yes now they do have the J----- lot. :D
