Sky digibox Problem ?

gran (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 13th January 2002, 16:26

I seem to have developed a problem picking up certain channels,The Box for one & Euronews for another.I have tried a reboot & used the new install in the "hidden" menus but to no avail.I have checked with Sky that I should be still recieving these channels & they assure me all is OK at their end.The signal strength is about 50% & quality about 75%.The dialogue box says "No satellite signal is being recieved" Does this suggest the minidisc has moved out of alignment?
Hope someone can enlighten me.
Regards.

Don`t know if this helps but I had a similar problem last year. At first only a couple of channels started to deteriorate eventually becoming unwatchable. I checked the picture strength and quality and they had dropped dramatically. As time went on more and more of the channels became the same until they all went completely (within a matter of days from the original problem).

Sky informed me that it was either the box or the dish (duh.....why didn`t I think of that!). Anyway, the Sky engineer came and replaced the box, don`t know what exactly was wrong with it (I was at work at the time), but it cost me £60.

Technology is a bummer ain`t it!

Sounds like the old -"we`ve got a heat problem on the tuner unit and don`t think we should tell people` problem. The symptoms being that occasionally you`ll be unable to pick up frequencies when - say - moving up through the channels. You can pick them up when you move down to the channel though (or vice versa). The tuner unit starts drifting and progressively gets worse meaning a gradual decline into less and less channels.

It sounds like your dish is slightly out of line as both the stations you mention are broadcast from Eurobird (at 28.5 degrees east) not Astra 2 (at 28.2 degrees east). I had a similar problem with my digibox (also a Grundig) and the dish needed re-aligned.

Alternatively, depending on when your dish was installed, you may be losing signal from your cable because of damage. Worth checking.

I have just found "Adventure one" has the same problem,is this also on Eurobird ? Can you tell me other channels to try and therefore check it is an out alignment problem. This sounds easier to verify or disprove than a faulty digibox.
Thanx for your replies.
