wh smith charging 1p for a carrier bag

jemma (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 13th September 2008, 13:36

Good afternoon All,
Dose any one know who Wh smith think they are chargeing 1p for a carrier bag?
The carrier bag says that the item was paid for, supose I bought a magazine from a corner shop no carrier bag or receipt then went in to Smiths. What would an average person think?
I`d also be interested to know who sells printed carrier bags so cheaply

Can you imagine whitherspoon chargeing 5p extra for a slice in my G&T or 10P extra for ice
I`ve never heard of any establishment that gives me a reduction on black coffee, no milk/ cream or sugar/ sweatner

Perhaps if Smiths are so hard up they should file for bankruptsy?

Oh boo f***ing hoo, 1p for a plastic bag that will take decades to degrade in a landfill somewhere. If you can carry a magazine from the corner shop without a bag you can carry a magazine from whsmiths without a bag.

No problem at all with them charging for them. It`s very rare when I buy anything from such places that I ask for a bag. Amazingly just that 1p deters people from buying them - which is good.. :)

They still give you a receipt, so if you do go into another shop you`ll have proof you paid for it.

not that I usually go into town to buy things, but when I do, the rare occasion I buy a DVD/CD from HMV or Virgin (shows how long ago i bought a DVD in the high street ;) ) they ask if I want a bag, i usually say "no thanks", as I have a rucksack/courier bag with me to put odds and sods in.

I do remember though reading that 1 supermarket started charging for carrier bags, and they noticed that sales of bin liners went up.

a lot of people (we do) use carrier bags as bin liners, so since they weren`t getting/taking so many for free they were having to buy them. the downside of this is bought bin liners are apparently less environmentally friendly than carrier bags!

Does anyone else remeber when Tesco used to charge for bags anyway? Must have been late 70`s early 80`s.

No it doesn`t. Are you saying I could take an old Smiths bag in, fill it and claim the bag was proof of purchase?

Dr 42%er,
No because an old one by its very appearance would indicate that you had not been there that day.

Also while you where filling it with loot, staff might notice

or give your idea a try and let me know of your results
