can any one help me and tell me what i would need to study at college to become a guitar technician and if that will provide a decent career that i can live off. been playing for 8 years and would love to spend all day fiddling with them, love fixing things and i cant think of a better thing to fix. any help much appreciated

it has occured to me that i didnt mean guitar tech i meant someone who repairs and modifies guitars, not nesecerally a luthier but fixing them

So you don`t mean a guitar tech that goes on tour with a band?

i`d love to do that but thats not really a career

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

When fishermen catch dolphin-friendly tuna, how do they know which tuna are being friendly to dolphins?

Common sense informs me that I would just contact a local college and find out what`s available. Otherwise, Google away.

Noel Gallagher used to be a guitar tech.
From what I can gather, he wangled it in what appears to be the usual manner.
Hanging around the right pubs/clubs/people.
My MD`s cousin got his gig with Thin Lizzy simply by drinking in the same pub as somebody or other (I`ve heard the story about 1000 times, but I still forget).
TBH, I`d suggest working in a guitar shop would be the best start.
If word gets around you can set-up guitars to a special level, you never know what might come of it. 8)
This seems to apply with other occupations.
Grand Prix teams, for example, are staffed by people who worked in shops, but got a reputation for being able to do special things.
Be very aware though, I know several people who started earning a living from a hobby they loved.
It becomes a whole different ballgame when it`s your job.
It suddenly takes a lot of the fun out of it.
I know one bloke who loved motorbikes so much, he chased a job in the business.
He can barely bring himself to ride one now, coz he looks at them all day long.
