RE: Who else has to pay to work?
I know that at our main hospital, a couple of years back, that a new multi-story car park was built. Since there is no other car parking facilities available anywhere nearby, and there are no train facilities either, people either had to take the bus to go to work there, or fork out an exorbitant amount every time they came to work.
It all amounted to a pay cut for those who drove, but who could afford to complain and risk the wrath of the higher-ups?

I have to pay annual subscription to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales - its about £270 a yr a present I think. If i dont pay it I lose my qualification
I have, however, starting getting the taxman to add it onto my tax code so that I at least save tax at 20% on that amount

isnt this somet to do with a closed shop? I think actors have to do it as well by joining Equity and i think works in your favour.....i do however stand corrected.... :B
You talking about my fees neil?
if so not sure how it works in my favour. I shell out money and get sweet fa in return - well apart from the priviledge of being able to continue writing some initials after my name (that i have studied and passed exams to obtain in the first place)
:-D
I should add the only time the intials do get put after my name is on letters from the institute and on the company business cards (and I asked work if I could get away without putting them on it but that was not allowed)

Sorry Mods
Its been over 30 years since my careers teacher told us about his time in India as a soldier, hence why the following is a little vague:
I can`t recall if they caught a Indian guy stealing or having a second job as his primary career as porter at the local railway station required him to give most if not all of his wages to the station master for the first year to cover "training" or the privilege of having the job.
Another story he told us & recalled with greater clarity was observing why an Indian man was apparently holding a stick above his head, to be told it wasn`t a stick but his withered arm which he had sworn on the death of his mother years before to hold above his head for the rest of his life. :o
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
When fishermen catch dolphin-friendly tuna, how do they know which tuna are being friendly to dolphins?
