But who`ll tend to the lambs? R.I.P Jack Sugden
Greatly saddened to hear today about the death of Clive Hornby, the actor that Played Jack Sugden in Emmerdale. I`ve gone off the show completely, but as my parents watched it religiously (back when it was ...farm) so of course, Clive was always a very familiar face.
Shall be missed

I grew up in North Yorkshire so bumped into most of the Emmerdale cast on a regular basis, Clive Hornby was a nice chap, always said hello when I recognised him in the town. cant say Ive watched the show with any regularity for a long time though. He must have been the longest serving cast member, like Wendy Richards in eastenders hes just always been in it

Yep have to agree he was a nice chap, I took some psychi patients on a day trip to look around the village where its filmed and he came over and said hello. He made the groups day signing autographs etc and didnt p*** off when he could have done.

I`m not being insensitive - but is it necessary to lose the character of Jack Sugden ? No doubt decisions are already being made as to whether the role is recast or retired, but here`s a thought. In Dallas some years ago the Miss Ellie role changed from Barbara Bel Geddes to Donna Reed - and then back to Barbara Bel Geddes again. Don`t know whether the original Jack, Andrew Burt, could be tempted back - but why not - a good actor, the right age and always charismatic. Admittedly you couldn`t bring in a new Seth or an Amos, real characters, but an ageing moaning ex-farmer - no problem. Anyway, for now - RIP Clive.

Nah, that`s then, this is now. Also, this is the UK, not the US. The time has gone when money-grabbing execs could replace actors under the character. Clive had been in the programme for so long that to simply replace him would produce a s***storm the likes of which OFCOM has never seen...

Clive Hornby wasn`t the original actor who played the part of Jack Sugden on Emmerdale Farm.

He was the 2nd Jack.
Not unlike the R4 Dead Ringers Joke about a martial arts guru who was a fifth dan in "The Archers"?
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

So how many other parts have been recast successfully or otherwise - that old bloke in citizen smith, all the kids in corrie, scott in neighbours, petra in blue peter (dead - but not dead), Hannibal Heyes in Alias Smith and Jones, the main character in `The Brothers` many years ago, Two of Jack`s wives in Emmerdale (Pat and Sarah) and the Dolly Skilbeck character, James Bond etc etc, ditto endless Doctor Who - and love the fifth dan in the archers on the previous post which is still making me chuckle ;)
Any other additions or otherwise ?

Goodnight Sweetheart - When they recast the female leads & I started fancying Garys "new" wife & hated Phoebe (instead of the otherway about).
