Anyone else feeling the "££" pinch?

dusty321 (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 8th June 2008, 19:22

Been struggling these past few months with money so thought id try one of those budget calculators on MSE, filled in all the outgoings lesser CC and loans and the kick up the arse was in real terms I only have £67 free each month to pay £300 worth of debt :( my only saving grace was up until a few months ago I had money from a re-mortgage to help out. Now the crunch has hit because I have no dosh left! The biggest worry being loosing the house, that would be a huge kick in the nuts and as my luck would have it I really only have enough money to pay this month, Christ knows what happens next month....

One is in the boo boo, anyone else having problems?

Slowly digging our way out of a mess at the moment...fiance is now debt free, but I still have some to pay off...looking at buying our first house now though, so I would say in a month or two, we will be feeling it!

Given the last few years of financial hell i thought we`d be screwed, but god knows how we`re surviving. as long as we don`t go nuts we`re muddling through

That said, our latest copy of the company magazine has an introduction from the company chairman. We`ve known it`s been getting bad for a while (I work for a building supplies firm) and the introduction contained the phrase "I know some difficult decisions will have to be made" at the end of the first paragraph.

Seemed I was the only one that spotted the true meaning behind that phrase

I and the wife lived beyond our means for the last two years really, we were still earning alot and still managed to rack up debt.

Unbelivable that this could happen but I`m crap with money and so is she so theres no hope.

Had a bit of good fortune with jobs lately and managed to get a large rise, without this i`d be fooked

I feel for everyone with the cost of living nowadays. my parents said they never had credit back when i was a kid. I said petrol was around 45p a litre and beer abit more. food cheap as chips and no gadgets on the market so all there was to buy was beer and food!

Bit different nowadays

feeling the pinch in more ways than one, its not just the rising cost of fuel etc its the drop in wages, as if bills going up isnt enough I work for a company that had the bright idea of employing a busload of poles to bring costs down (read into that employing poles working regular hours = cheaper than paying the staff we have overtime) so now we are massivly (sp?) overstaffed for the work we have and on top of that no hope of overtime which we need to make our crappy almost minimum wage wages better. Im around £150 a month down and when your on a low wage to begin with thats a lot!

and the boss wonders why the negotiations for a wage rise have become so nasty

Difficult situation for me to say if I am feeling the pinch or not

Those of you who are not self employed, might not want to read the next bit.

SPOILER:
Up to December I was getting mileage for going to work & going on site calls, while waiting for visa confirmation I decided to carry the increased cost of travelling to work from the minimal wages I pay myself (at current rates 50% of my wage is going on fuel).

I am now at the point where I will not renew my current contract, because working leaves me out of pocket twice over due to the current rising fuel cost & not able to reclaim that back. If the contract wording isn`t changed & I can start to reclaim mileage expenses I will not renew my current contract & ride out the next six months without having to work\move to Canada, paying my wages from the reserves built up over the last 2 or 3 profitable years of 9 years of trading.

Before anyone starts having a pop about the prospect of me sat on my arse & getting paid for it, I had years where I owed myself £3k+ in wages (& really could have used the money if I had it) & expenses, having already paid the tax on those wages, worked overtime\weekends without any extra money actually being in my personal account at the end of the month. I think I am overdue for a little payback.

Overall yes I am feeling the pinch, despite any appreciable drop in me & THO`s lifestyle.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

I`d imagine most people are feeling the pinch, you`d have to be loaded not to.
We`re doing `fine`, but that`s it.
`Fine` doesn`t cut it for me though.
I don`t want to work to `exist`.
I want to live a little.
Unfortunately, that seems to be a bit of an alien concept in modern-day UK.
I really can`t remember a time when it`s been quite so depressing, living here (I`m 41).
