Good news about loud adverts

This is long overdue:

Watchdogs crack down on over-loud ads

The scourge of adverts blaring out of your TV louder than the show you were watching is to be banished.

Advertising watchdogs have set out new rules which mean advertisers can`t use a technical get-out clause to pump up the volume.

The old guidelines from the Broadcast Committe on Advertising Practice tell advertisers the overall volume of their breaks can`t be louder than the TV show.

Cunning admen worked out years ago that they could get around this by boosting speech and other sounds in the middle of your hearing range and damping down sounds at the extremes - a technique known as `compression` where the total volume stays the same.

But ads still sound louder, and in 2007, BCAP received more than 100 complaints that some TV ads were too loud, prompting a review of its rules.

BCAP spokesman Shahriar Coupal said: "BCAP were acutely aware of the frustration that excessively loud or seemingly noisy ads werecausing consumers. This should help prevent consumers having to turn down the volume during ad breaks."

The new rules will come into force from July 7, and ban this trick by focussing on the listening experience instead of the technical qualities.

The TV Advertising Code will now say: "Advertisements must not be excessively noisy or strident. The maximum subjective loudness of advertisements must be consistent and in line with the maximum loudness of programmes and junction material."

PVR + 60 seconds skip button = Happy me :D

Actually I very seldom watch live tv, I tend to record everything and watch it back later or on the weekend. Or I get the d/l which have the ads cut out already.

Yeah same here but when the kids are watching something and the adverts kick in it makes the pictures fall off the walls.

Unfortunately Sky+ doesn`t have a "skip" button, only FF up to 30 times. Been hoping they`d add one for ages now but not sure the advertisers will allow them.

About time, p***es me right off. E4 is one of the worst offenders, and Paramount Comedy. South Park is like a whisper than the ads almost make my ears bleed.

I`ll sometimes lie in bed watching TV after the wife has gone to sleep, and it`s awful if I`m watching a commercial channel nice and quietly when suddenly the sound of an advert break wakes her up!

Glad to hear something`s being done.
