Laptop Warrenty Issue -

I got a free Dell Laptop with the AOL package last september so it is still in its year warrenty. I was using it last week - on opening it and lifting the monitor part up I heard a crack and the corner bracket that hold the montor to the keyboard part was cracked, broken and sticking out. The metal/ceramic part of the chassis was cracked making it difficult to open the laptop. No other part of the laptop is damaged.

It was not dropped or used as a foot stool yet part of the chassis is damaged. After two heated calls to Dell, sending Photos etc they are saying it is not covered by the warrenty. Are they correct?

Can cermaic/metal corrode/crack after normal use? Do I contact Watchdog?

I`d persue it, I have had similar issues with HP in the past, where the screen outer layer physically cracked on one but the actual panel didn`t leak.

Took some doing with impatient voice on talking to various Indians & "supervisors" repeating myself endlessly "Yes I would agree with you that screen damage is usually down to the users fault, but on this occassion I would say no its not".

This doesn`t sound like failure due to normal wear & tear.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

had a similar problem, probably with a laptop of similar material, before getting my desktop. you`re best asking them to service it and replace the surface because it`s not meant to crack so easily - it`s technically a faulty product. make sure all your work`s backed-up before you give it them, tho

i had to stop using mine because the plastic or whatever was melting and giving off fumes
