Digital carbon monoxide alarm reading, help !

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 10th April 2008, 15:39

I just bought a new carbon monoxide alarm unit two weeks ago and fitted it next to my combi boiler in the kitchen.

In the two weeks i have tested the peak level and I got 41parts per million in the first week and in the second week I got 31parts per million.

Is this dangerous? or does these units always give a certain peak value each week above zero.

it says in my handbook, that a dangerous level is 100 parts per million, and over a half hour period at that level it will alarm.

It does not talk about reading under 100 parts per million, so are the reading I am getting safe.

Should I be getting zero parts per million each week ?
Is there other things in the kitchen that would acount for the 41 and 31 reading?

I now feel more worried than secure, due to buying this device.

I`m no expert, but surely carbon monoxide is constantly present in the atmosphere? I think carbon monoxide poisoning is caused by extreme levels.

It`s just a guess though.

Get a cat.
They make excellent carbon monoxide monitors.
Our one started acting `funny` one morning.
Like he was drunk, and making a funny meow.
Turned out the flue was blocked and the house was filling with fumes.
Opening the windows had him right as rain, after a while. :D

The Health and Safety Executive publish `safe` levels of workplace exposure limits to certain chemicals.

See www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/table1.pdf

What it says for CO is that the short term exposure limits (15 minute exposure) is 200ppm and the long term exposure limit (8 hour - equivalent to a typical working day) is 30ppm

As it is sited next to your boiler - there may be a higher reading because of the combustion process combined with other cooking events (anything like my place - burnt offerings could also contribute).

What are the levels like throughout the rest of the house?
