Any shower experts here?

sashenden (Elite) posted this on Monday, 17th March 2008, 19:41

I have got a booster pump in the airing cupboard for the shower and kitchen supplies that runs continuously unless I switch it off at the mains. I live in a flat so it is all on one level. The hot water tank is on the ground and the cold water tank is above it in the airing cupboard. The pump is on the floor next to the hot water tank. Other than the continuous running it works fine, it is just a pain to be always turning it on and off. There dont appear to be any leaks anywhere I can see, any advice on how to cure it?

The pump is an Aqualisa Aquaforce 30, the shower is a white plastic Aqualisa with hidden pipework.

Mmmm, tricky one this. Shower pumps have a habit of being troublesome in a flat setup - my mates one somehow was plumbed into the toilet as well as the shower, and when it was flushed the pump would kick in and refill the cistern in about 5 secs :D Never did work out why (it should have only operated on the hot supply). It could be a fault with the pump, but more likely it just doesn`t like the system. Only real option would be to move it closer to the shower, so only the demand for that goes through the pump, but no promises that would work either. :/

It cant get any closer to the shower without being in the bath. :-) The shower is plumbed in through the wall from the airing cupboard and the pump to shower pipework is about 6ft long. I cant find much on this pump through Google so I guess I will have to live with it for now. Presumably there is a switch that detects the change in pressure when the shower is turned off and on and maybe that is faulty.

From your description its a twin impeller model and on the inlet side there should be 2 internal flow sensors, one on each of the feeds in, chances are one of these has failed, this would cause the pump to try and run continuously - they can also be tricked by a leaking tap etc but this usually results in the pump "hunting" that is to say it will run, shut off, run, shut off continually - i`d personally say it was a faulty flow switch ;)

Think the model you have is obsolete tho will have a look when i get soem time this evening

p.s doesnt have a chrome button somewhere that u push to normally activate it does it? some of these booster pumps had a vacuum sytem to turn them on and off...

As Spangles (Great Name) says it is probably the flow switch that is faulty, I would give PlumbCentre a call to see if there is a service kit for it or a new flow switch assembly. They are pretty good for parts for older models.

All the best

Thanks for the replies but I was hoping for a no cost option. The flat is rented so hoped it was just a quick adjustment needed. No worries, I will ask the landlady to get her plumbing sorted at some time. :)
