Can anyone recommend a good suitcase make?

admars (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 27th January 2007, 19:54

Hi,

off the top of my head the only suitcase makes i know are

Delsey (cos my parents have a couple)
Samsonite
Antler.
Carlton

I have 1 medium suitcase, need another, for my other half, not sure whether to get another medium, or get a large.

We like the trolley style ones, and are willing to spend up to £100, maybe more. Not sure whether to go for soft, or hard, it will be used on an aeroplane.

I suppose actually, my real question is, is it worth paying the extra money for a Samsonite, over a Carlton?

I just had a quick look at online at Argos, John Lewis, and Debenhams, and quickly came to the conclusion, I`ll have to actually go to a shop to see what they look like in real life :(

Still, would like peoples` opinions on what they have.

Cheers

Al

There`s currently an MSE thread on this that I just posted to -

As I posted there - careful with the hard ones as they really eat into baggage allowances if you use the budget airlines where they tend to be a lot less.

After struggling to meet the 15kg limit on a recent Ryanair flight we decided the critical issue from now on was weight and if it meant buying cheaper but more often then that was fine. Bought one from argos - Revelation/Antler canvas type trolley case wieghed under 3kg but they don`t appear to do it anymore - only more flimsy ones.

Even though we went 9 months later, we picked up our honeymoon cases in the winter sales at rackhams both 100 down to 50.

I got a huge antler one and the mrs got samsonite. Both survived 9 flights (18 loads and off loads) in the space of a month, so I would recommend either brand.

I would also recommend getting to a HoF tomorrow before the sales end.

Wouldn`t a suitecase been more easier, I bet it was difficult to pack you clothes in, did you have to put each clothing on one of the points, I bet you had to be careful carrying that incase you accidently stabbed someone.

This may sound daft, the last few holidays all the family has had cheap flimsy "canvas" wheeled ones due to maximising baggage weight & all lasted with the exception of my larger one which was bought in Dartford & had to carry the bulkier items like battery chargers for camcorder & laptop (& indeed my laptop & wheeled case until I got to Gatwick).

Cut a long story short it suffered a rip while running downhill for the train, by the end of the trip it was not going overseas again.

Last year I actually found a (the only one in the store) heavy duty "skateboarders" wheeled travel bag, with an area for the skateboard, zip out compartments that took shirts, net bags for socks & toiletaries etc & finally jeans & other odds & sods in the main bag itself.

Cost me a tenner in TK Maxx & when I got home THO`s opinion went from "Thats not a suitcase!" to "Can I have it instead" & trying to swap "hers" for mine, all I got through the trip was "I wish I had one of those".

Best buy in luggage I ever made.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Todays goal is to exceed yesterdays record level of totally unverifable productivity.

I don`t understand why people knock ASBO`s, they are good things as for most of the recipients, these are the only qualifications they will ever have.

For that not to sound odd, you should have missed out the `one` at the end of the sentence. If you need any further advice on things like that, just email me. Im always happy to help.

For example, I could have made a joke about a `suitecase` and having difficulty fitting a full 3 piece into it, but that would be lame.

Oooh get you, guess you can`t take a joke, that you have to resort to the old grammer lecture.

You might as well of said Ha Ha, if you`ve watched Red Dwaf you`ll know what I mean by that. ;)

Antler. Very hard wearing but not cheap. And remember if you`re going to the US to get the approved locks, in case they burst the built in ones.
