a good hotel within reach of cardiff?

cirdan (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 31st October 2006, 00:56

going to the rugby at the weekend and our plans have changed so we are looking for somewhere to stay, very last minute.

ive been looking at hotels within cardiff, not a lot of availability. want something decent as my parents are going to.

anywhere within 30minutes of cardiff i guess, any suggestions? could be a good B+B as we have stayed in some nice ones. somewhere nice clean and not too expensive. as i say ive been looking for a few hours but pictures can only tell you so much.

thanks.

try looking in Newport area (where I live) its only 10 minutes away by train and 20 ish by car. there is a travel inn there (bout £45 a night I think) a holiday Inn. Celtic Manor and Hilton Hotel if your feeling flush and a load of bed and breakfast but most of those are based in big old houses and you get what you pay for really.
I would have thought all those places would still have places available as Newport isnt seen to be as close as it actually is if you understand what I mean

If still out of luck try The Regan Hotel. Guest House. 81 Cathedral Road, Cardiff, CF11 9PG. Telephone: +44(0) 29 2038 3660.

My missus stayed there for weeks on end because of work. Reasonable rates, good quality rooms. Also take a look at the SACO website - offers can often be found on there,

Jib

If your only going to the rugby then it would be worth not staying int the City as parking is a nightmare and very expensive and the traffic can be really bad, Caerphilly or Newport are a good choice as only 10 mins away by train. Might have to que for train going back though.

Also try The Village and Quality hotels, both are in Coryton on the edge of Cardiff near a train station.

Holiday Inn Pentwyn but you would have to drive/bus into City.

If you do stay in the City make sure parking is included otherwise you could be looking at £30/day extra.

When I`m working away I usually try findmeabnd

All the best

thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

after i posted i did some searching and came up with a list of possibles. i tried to get ones that had some good feedback. if it was just myself it would have been easier but with my parents they want something half decent which is fair enough. we dont get away a lot so when we do, like going to visit my brother in london or going to the rugby, we try and make it a bit of a break, so choosing the hotel/b+b is always a little tricky.

one on the list was in the brecon beacons, a village outside merthyr. had some good writeups and a good price. so we are going to give it a go. i did look in cardiff at first but then i figured i might get something good if i go futher out, like has been mentioned, and its only 20 minutes or so out which is fine.

but ive kept a note of the ones mentioned above as we are hoping to go down again for the six nations in the new year, so i have a head start then.

thanks again.

Be worth leaving some extra travel time as the A470 in to Cardiff can be a bit of a bottle neck at busy times.

Que the Merthyr Girl jokes.

How do you know when a Merthyr Girl has had an orgasm?
She drops her kebab!

What does a Merthyr girl say during sex?
Hurry up my bus will be here in a minute!

And many more that I don`t have time to write at moment.

All the best

Been there to see West Ham 3 times. This worked well for us:

Stayed at Marriott Hotel Bristol.

Drive or taxi to Chepstow Station (10 mins) for train direct to Cardiff (20 mins).

Worked fine each time, and depending on who`s playing, the que for the train from Cardiff out to Chepstow is normally smaller :)

otherwise, stay in Chepstow, lots of nice smaller hotels, and its an easy train ride in. Just check the train times as they seem to miss one out for some reason.
