The end of DVD.............
.....is when..?????!!!!
This sounds like a daft question, but since everyone`s collection grows and grows, are you not fearful of when another format comes out and we have to start ALL over again!!!!!
I hope the DVD format lasts as long as VHS, but what do you experts out there reckon????
I`m not an expert by any means, but if previous formats are anything to go by, DVD in its current form will last 20 years or longer. Successful consumer formats (of which DVD is one) tend to last a very, very long time - look at CD, VHS, cassette, vinyl... heck, even Laserdisc lasted about 22 years and that was just a niche format.
Maybe in 2021 it`ll be time to start thinking about DVD`s longevity (and how many DVDs will you own by then?!), but now is far too soon to be worrying about such things.

RE: The end of DVD.............
Just speculating but there won`t be another format which u buy films for from the high street just a massive hard drive that u just keep adding to as a new film becomes available. Downloading thru the phone line is the future.
Just seen a new deck by JVC- same principal as TIVO-could be the future
Forget recordable dvd-we need solid state record and editing
RE: The end of DVD.............
the thing about DVD is you can use them in your computer aswell and now u can record to them on your computer, The industry likes it because you have to know your stuff to copy dvds, and we like them because they provide better quality and are smaller then vhs so everyones a winner, eventually something better will come along but at the moment dvd is getting to big to simply replace

RE: The end of DVD.............
clear disc which can hold 20 times that off a dvd will be the big daddy in 5 years or so
RE: The end of DVD.............
Why would anyone need 20 times the space of a DVD?
DVD will be around and be in use well after it becomes outdated. VHS has been outdated practically since it was released, but it is only being slowly phased out just now. Even when the clear discs you speak of do come out (those flourescent things, I know the `uns you mean) I dont think anybody is really going to want them!
DVD is here to stay, in my opinion.
You lot talk as though VHS is dead, the machines sell 3-4 times more then DVD.....I mean who`s gonna spend a £1500 just to record the odd TV programme .......not me, DVD is not king of the jungle yet, it might be one day but not yet!

Bear is right - most people out there are still using VHS. It doesn`t make any sense to introduce a new format while DVD is still in its infancy, why kill the golden goose before it`s hatched?
What you have to remember is that ordinary people, the non-techy types, are not swayed by talk of fluorescent media and bleeding-edge technology. They value (a) low cost and (b) a huge catalogue of titles to choose from above all else. And they don`t switch formats at the drop of a hat - they stick with what they`ve got for years. CDs were introduced in 1983, but they took 10 years to overtake the sales of audio cassettes, and I suspect we won`t see DVD reach its full potential much before the end of this decade.

RE: The end of DVD.............
better sound and picture, perhaps even a whole tv series of say 20 star treks on one disc?
its a bit hipocritical of you being regresive when you have a DVD player dont you think.
What you will see id dvd in its current form like vhs.But they will bring out
enhanced versions with more capacity etc like svhs. The dvd in its current form will be here for a long time.Every pc we sell now has dvd as standard
and not cd rom.
