How long is a reasonable time to wait for a DVD recorder repair?

harry66 (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 19th September 2006, 12:06

Reposting this here as I have had no replies in the Retailer forum...

Handed my Panasonic DVD recorder in for repair at Richer sounds on 12th August but still not got it back - nor can I get any idea of when the repair will be done - despite many phone calls to the store.

I didnt bother buying their Supercare as I was a bit strapped and also figured a Panasonic would not break!!

What do people think is a reasonable time to wait before I start making a fuss? Checked the Consumer Direct website but it just talks about `reasonable time` - wot a week, month, 2 months??

Getting a bit impatient here as there is some new series I want to record and I dont have a DVD player so cant even watch any DVDs. Yes I know I could buy a standalone player but dont have the space for it.

Any feedback from people with experience of the Richer sounds repair service appreciated.

I would think about two weeks (depending). How old is it & what went wrong.

Todays The Day. Tomorrow can wait...

If you`re not getting a satisfactory response from the branch, how about contacting the chairman direct? Aren`t richer sounds supposed to pride themselves on good customer service?

I would have though 2 weeks for repair or at least notify you that it would take longer and why.

Can`t comment on Richer Sounds or Panasonic, but I can tell you that a DVD Recorder is generally repaired and returned to its owner by LITEON in 1-2 weeks.

I agree - go higher than just speaking to the local branch. You have consumer`s rights!

The player was about 6 months old when the drive finally failed - but thinking back I think it may have been a bit dicky from the word go. It seemed to have problems reading quite a few of my DVDR discs which had been fine on my previous DVD player and the problems seemed to get worse until it eventually failed to play anything.

The problem is hopefully resolved now - I rang the Customer services number yesterday and asked them politely how long they thought was reasonable a wait. Once I gave the guy my details he apologised for my problems (sounded like he meant it) and promised to look into it and get back to me.

Sure enough he rang me back within an hour and had arranged for the store to provide me a new replacement as he could not provide a date for the repair to be done. Heading over there this evening to collect the new unit.

Pretty good huh! I cant imagine the same resolution at Curries / Comet etc - probably would have wanted me to keep waiting.

Sounds like a good result

It took me six weeks to get an insurance writeoff from Comet on a six-month-old Ferguson telly once. On the other hand, Littlewoods` engineer took one look at a Philips widescreen where the tube was failing and wrote it off on the spot.

Your mileage may vary.

Don`t talk to me about Comet! >:(

Took me 5 weeks to get a refund when a mini-fridge (the kind you have in the bedroom) stopped working last year. The story was farcical. I have never stepped foot through their doors again.
