Confronting shoplifters before they enter your store - BIG MISTAKE

Just Askin (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 23rd August 2006, 12:59

I did it today with a repeat shoplifter.

Saw him eying up our store across road so I went out and told him to forget it, cause if he steps foot inside the store the police will be called.

Now, when we catch him instore, he`s as quiet as a mouse, hands over the goods and leaves.

Outside though is a different matter. He started mouthing off for embarassing him in public. He actually thinks no one else knows he`s a shoplifter. The best bit was when his fellow shoplifters came over to see what the fuss was about and threatened to knock my head off.

So, outnumbered I had to back down but not before reminding his friends that knocking my head off was probably against their parole terms. Told them all not to step foot inside the store again.

While they all carried on mouthing off, I went back in the store wondering what the f*** I was playing at!

Wont be doing that again in a hurry.

I am more than happy to tell someone not to even bother coming in. I have asked someone to leave the shop befor now as I had seen him walk by with a known earlier in the day. Now, he may never have lifted in his life, and he may have been embarresed. Tough s***. As I told him "sorry but you are guilty by assosiation (sp). Get some new friends" Scum hangs round with scum. The radio system we have activly encorouges you to report sightings to CCTV and other retail outlets and if you can, let them see you do it. That way they know the camares are on them and everyone knows they are about.

The Citywatch thing we use is the best in the UK acording to the home office who help fund it. Every call is loged to the user so if there is abuse of the system then they know who it is. Saying that, I do have the local on there and I can "point to point" my order in. No one eles hears.

The other day I reported 2 knows by name I did not know the other IC1 male that was with them and had hanged back to have a look in. 15 seconds later I had his name. "sorry *****, you are not welcome" As you know thier name they know they can not do anything as they can be ID`d. I all so know he carries neddles so I have to be carefull.

So what ?
Does that mean it was never used for it`s intended purpose ?
That`s just cutting off your nose to spite your face.
It`s like refusing to have a fire extinguisher because they look ugly.
It`s only `you` that will suffer.

It can sound bad if you are on the shop floor and all you can hear from the radio is people going on about the match. Not that there is not the odd giggle on there. A while back there was a call asking:
Whisky Oscar to Tango victor, can we have the cameras put on the front doors please as we have an ambulace comming.

TV to WO, why, what is it?

WO to TV, it`s a white type of van that take people to hospital. buts thats not important right now.

TV says, Out. (in groan type voice)

Now I know it is an Airplane joke but it was if they had been rehursing it it was so spot on.

The CCTV is but we as shop owners choose to join and pay for the radio and inteligance side of things.

Like wise, I hope none of my taxes go towards the municiple golf courses you have no doubt played on ;)

One just came over now. IC1 male, about 30, shaved dark hair, grey t-shirt, blue jeans. Here is the bit I think they should have put out first. Will be carrying a huge EEYOER soft toy from Winnie the Pooh. Value £120. I mean, the first part could be one of 100`s of blokes in the area. I think the large soft toy would be the clincher.
