Digital camera reccomendation

lorbobo (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 21st June 2006, 10:05

I have a polaroid digital camera, but it has a half second pause between pressing the shutter and taking the picture, by which time my daughter has looked away or moved.
I am looking to by a decent digital camera with less or no shutter pause and all the usual features but not too dear.
Any websites, shops or camera reccomendations.
Cheers

As I understand it,until you start spending big (professional) money, you will always get some sort of delay between pressing the button and taking the picture.
Seems to be a fact of life with them.
My last two cameras have been Sony`s,and I think they`re brilliant.
Current one is a DSC-W5,I think.

Without knowing a price It`s difficult to recommend but without going too deep here is my experience. Fuji... Excellent camera`s. Nikon Excellent camera`s mostly with good movie mode. Canon, got one for a friend but not used it much myself but she thinks it`s the bee`s knee`s & I have to say it is excellent.

Now to my recent purchase. I tried 3 cameras. One was the 12.5 X optical zoom Panasonic, also the 12.5 X optical zoom Canon. Both about £350-00. Both excellent. The last one was the Panasonic DMC-TZ1. I used a SD card in all 3 cameras & compared the results & the Canon was `slightly` better but not enough to put off the others. In the end I choose the Panasonic DMC-TZ1 because it has a 10X optical zoom & can be put in a shirt pocket (unlike the other two). I`ve just been to Spain with it & I`ve taken photo`s of all kinds & it is by far the best Digital camera I`ve ever used. It also has a Movie mode that is 30 fps & W-I-D-E-S-C-R-E-E-N 16.9 (as well as normal size). I also took some amazing night shots leaving the apature open for a minute in what looked like pitch darkness. It can be set on easy mode & that`s it, no complication or more advanced mode. However to answer your one question I just tried taking a picture to find out about shutter delay. As you know on all or most cameras you have to push the shutter button slightly to set the focus & light, then when your subject is ready complete the push. On both inside & outside the shutter was instant, no waiting. I`ve also noticed that unlike any other camera I`ve had it doesn`t often use the flash & still the pictures are pin sharp. The camera is about £350-00 but I got it on the net for £256-00, but if I had time it was available for £206-00 in a couple of places, but has to come from Hong Kong or similar.

Very happy with a Fuji and a Minolta Dimage. The Samsung on Argos with 7m pixels seems a bit of overkill - better going for something with bigger optical zoom if you`re happy to spend £120 plus. If you want to keep price low there are plenty of options from the Fuji refurb store (6 months warranty) at www.fujifilm.co.uk

As always with digital cameras you cant beat Steve`s Digicams site for full reviews of a very wide selection of cameras.

FinePix S9500 Zoom £ 284.99 looks a fantastic bit of kit... currently using a Minolta Dimage F300, but the battery compartment door is broken so a replacement may be in the offing?

Also, make sure you get a decent hi-speed memory card to decrease the delay between taking photos. I recently bought a new 50x SD Card for my Kodak (5 megapixel), and definitely notice a difference compared to the standard one it came with. I think for SD cards they now go up to 120x or even higher?

Adding my tuppence - if you are after sheer speed AND good quality shots, with a small size, I would recommend the Casio Z750. I bought it for £180 from ebuyer some time back. The camera is ready to shoot from pressing the on button to booting up etc. within half a second, and the shutter lag is not even noticeable... It has specialised modes for taking shots of pets and kids (more movement, faster shutter speed) - allowing you to choose it without making adjustments yourself. Kinda like giving you the professional settings without having to trouble yourself. Pair that with a memory card from mymemory.co.uk - where a 2gig 133x SD card was £27.99 (plus £3.95 p&p) and you have yourself a great deal around £200 - which is much much much cheaper than most alternatives above!
