FLUTD - Cat that can`t wee

roar349 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 7th June 2006, 06:43

Anyone who has a cat (usually male) that`s had problems with Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). The big man in my sig had to be rushed to the vets on Saturday night after trying to pee in the middle of the laminate floor and failing miserably.

He`s now been at the vets for a few days (they should take the catheter out this morning), and providing he`s eating well should be home tonight/tomorrow. Not had the verdict from the vets as to what has caused it (crystals or infection), but anyone had experience of this.

Suggestions seem to be a possible change in diet (reduced ph diet/extra water in food).

Glad he was insured, £270 in vet bills so far with another visit next week to check all is progressing well and another urine check. Vets don`t think it is the recurring variety (crystals) and more likely an infection. Vets asked me to come and get him as he was just attacking all of them if they went near (I saw the wounds on the nurse), of course he saw me and came out purring :D

One of our female cats had a bit of urinary tract trouble last year - with help from our vet we discovered that it was something in the iams dry food that she was eating that wasn`t agreeing with her. We put her on all wet food for a couple of weeks and she`s been fine ever since. The vet said it`s not the first case of an intolerance to iams he`s seen - does your little furry friend eat them by any chance?

Ours can eat Purina One dry food now - it seems to have no effect on her at all, it`s only iams....

Thats interesting, I heard a few stories like that but with Go-Cat, which is why our mog is on Iams now.

We occasionally buy her purina if its cheap, but we might have to swap if this is the case.

this happened to my ex girlfriends cat one bonfire night. The little fella got so scared that he turned his pee to glass... (that is more or less what the vet said anyway)
I can`t remember the solution - she dumped me, so I am hardly going to waste brain space on her stupid cat`s bladder..

I am sooooo over you!!!!!!

No, he`s on a mix of whiskas/felix/sainsburys wet pouches with the odd tray of sheba thrown in. He does have an obsession (as in runs to the downstairs loo whenever someone goes in, as that`s where it`s kept after helping himself from the cupboard) with Ollie biscuits.

I use pheramone (sp!) plug in smellie things close by the litter tray - does the job for mine who has been on 5 courses of antibiotics and 3 courses of some tablet to `re-build ` the bladder lining.(thank god for pet insurance!!)

Humans cant smell it but apparently it stimulates the bladder control part of the brain for cats! they work and can get them in bigger pet shops - they arent to expensive

I also add extra water to the food so fat cat gets plenty of fluids!

It`s only gone and happened again. Got home at 9pm last night to be greeted by the cat licking his nuts (well not really seeing as he has none) on the pathway. Thought `here we go, better keep an eye on him`, sure enough just as I`ve cooked dinner he strolls in and sits in the litter tray for a few minutes with no success.

Cue phone calls to the vet on call (the other half tells me it was a nice antipodean), a taxi ride to the vets and waiting for 20 minutes for the vet to arrive. Meanwhile fireworks start going off, so being on my own I start ranting to myself about f***ing americans (no offence) and the 4th of July (I live in Basingstoke ffs) just in time for the vet to show up, who isn`t an aussie by any stretch of the imagination, but is quite clearly north american :¦ . Luckily I don`t think she heard me.

One needle in the bladder later the moggy was more comfortable (the heat wasn`t helping though), and he`s on the catheter for a few more days. Last time they ruled out diet being a problem, but they are suggesting it might be worth trying him on the special diet, and the extra water in his food.

Again, thank f*** for insurance.

I actually managed to eat my dinner at about 11:30.

I`d like to add the Head Vet at my local practice to the prick poll. Had a go at my heavily pregnant girlfriend this morning (over the phone so didn`t know she was about to drop one). Apparently we haven`t followed the instructions they gave us and the recurrence is our fault (we gave him the capsules as directed, we were told he didn`t need a special diet etc as it appeared to have been caused by an infection), and it`s also our fault that he attacks everyone at the vets who goes near him (apparently said head vet had a run in).

So the other half went to visit, once the cat saw her he became the purring, lovable monster we see at home (everyone but the head vet came in to witness the transformation), of course once he had to go back in his kennel the hissing and swiping started.

Hopefully he`ll be allowed home tomorrow.
