Page 1 of Any Camera Buffs

I want to treat myself to a nice digital camera but dont know a lot about them ,one thing i need to know is how do you find out what kind of shutter speeds these things do for taking pics of say sport

Depending on the sport if you want really good quality pics you will need a lot of money going for the digital SLR`s but the best way for any advice is to go down to your local shop have a look at ones you like, and you budget and then post back would make it a lot easier as there is such a good range.

Quick tips I think the best camera makers are canon by far, casio are not too bad, I find sony overpriced but they do make good cameras. I personally don`t really like fuji but a lot of people love them. Try looking at Steves digicams there is another site but I cant remember of the top of my head will post back when I find it.

Taking sport pics is generally a pain with digicams. There is usually a delay between shutter button press and the pic being taken. I know some of the Casios are quite fast.

Best to look at Steve`s digicams, look at the shutter response time and I would go for a good optical zoom; say 6x to 10x and use a monopod or tripod or get one with a good image stabiliser.

Getting an SLR is a good idea for your needs, but dont slay non-SLR digitals (compacts). Try comparing shutterspeeds and startup times - I think (dont know for sure) the Casio Z750 is pretty good, as is the Canon SD550... The downside is less zoom (only 3x)... but there is a substantial price differential

I would heartily recommend the FUJI S9500
Its a hibred of a DSLR and compact - looks like a DSLR and has all the functions of one.
but the lens isnt removeable - which is a good thing and its a 28-300mm!
I got mine from DABS for £375 i think at Xmas time.

its a good way to learn all about photography and not have to buy really expensive lenses etc before you really need to.
I plan to teach myself on this one and see how much i really use it before investing in a whole DSLR kit...
