Page 1 of Customs charges

I heard alot of talk about the charges customs can make to you when importing DVD`s but i have never read anywhere how much these charges are, does anyone know how much they can charge you, or what the average charge is? TIA
Chris
I`ve only ordered direct from the US once, (from www.cduniverse.com) but I didn`t get charged anything other than the cost of the disk/delivery.
It worked out at about £15 altogether and was delivered in less than a week (quicker than some orders i`ve placed with uk stores).
Not sure whether this is common or if I was just lucky not to get charged (unless it`s only packages over a certain weight or something).
The retailer is obliged to put a sticker on the package and to declare what the value of the goods are. For "optical" or "audio" media the limit before excise duty is payable is £18.
However, if you are buying the aforementioned goods as a gift then the limit increases to £36. You should always mention to the overseas retailers if the goods you are buying are gifts ;-)
The duty free limit for the UK is £18, their is the £36 option for gifts (but restrictions apply, if you mark items as gifts to many time customs will notice)
Customs charges (for DVDs) are:
3.5% Import Duty
17.5% VAT
£1.20 Post Office fee (or upto £10 for special carrier like DHL)
Does anyone know how what value of DVDs can be brought into the country?. I tried the custom page, but couldn`t make sense of it.
My mate is currently in the US, and as he does not have a DVD player, he has v.kindly offered to bring me back as many DVDs as I want! What a result!! hehehehe!.
I know the limit is £36 for importing, but is there a higher limit if your bringing back gifts? :)
I tried the custom page, but couldn`t make sense of it.
Cheers,
Bry.
