Guitar question?

dusty321 (Elite) posted this on Friday, 16th September 2005, 23:09

Anyone know if an electric guitar designed for a righty can have the strings swapped over to suit a lefty and work properly?

Yes you can so long as it has a double cut away so as to reach the top notes also if it has a tremerlo arm that will have to be removed so as to not get in the way, Hendrix did a fine job and he played his upside down.

i`m a lefty, and trust me....don`t bother messing about with a right handed guitar. i aquired
a right handed guitar when i first started playing (about 20 yrs ago) and soon disposed of
it for proper left handed model.

as the previous poster pointed out, if you do get a right handed guitar, go for
something similar to the gibson sg style, steer clear of the regular strat shape.

i know hendrix "got by" ;-) playing a guitar upside down, but seriously, did you see the
size of the dude`s hands????? :/

........is that gasoline i smell?

More hassle than it`s worth really, given that most manufacturers offer both left and right handed versions of each model - unless of course you have already purchased a right handed guitar......
I do know two lefty`s that play guitar right handed with know problem.
Something that has always puzzled me though is that the left hand does all the intricate work, yet is favoured by right handed players and vice versa with left handed players. What`s that all about?
Same goes for cutlery :)

You can change the strings over but more than often you`ll have to change the top nut and the intonation on the saddles at the bottom of the guitar will be out so the guitar will always be slightly out of tune.
I own a guitar shop so if you want a good deal on a lefty I`ll email you a few models and prices if you want.

You really shouldn`t have said that ;) What price could you do a right handed Aria Sinsonido Travel Bass?

Si & Sade - have you tried one of those? I`ve read over on Bassworld - one of my other hangouts - that they`re not too great - but I guess if it`s just for travel noodling...

I have played one Rich. I used one for our school show in the summer. IMHO it`s one of the nicest basses I`ve ever played and the sound was full enough for me. Piece of cake to carry around as well :)

Interesting - though I really can`t justify one as I don`t travel much any more....
