How do you know what Year a car is?

/////AMG (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 3rd September 2005, 16:56

I don`t understand why they don`t put what year the car was built when people sell cars. I know the number plate says it all but I have no idea what is what!
Anyone care to fill me in, please?
I`m curious to find out was D reg is (80`s something?)
If someone has a list, even better!

Even if they did put the year the car was built
You still cant be sure of the year as youre only knowledge of the year comes from electrical signals in the brain that you cannot be sure has any connection with the outside world

its only an indication to when the car was first registered though not actually built...I had a N reg fiesta (the one I crashed into a shop) and it was the `old shape` Mk3 almost all the N reg fiestas I saw on the road were the newer shape Mk4 as it was regestered right on the cut off point of the new model coming out and the garages selling off the older models cheaper....makes it a pain when buying spare parts though when you tell em its a N reg explain its a Mk3 and they give you parts for a Mk4 >:(

Isn`t there something with the new plates that tells you where the car was registered, similer to how it is done in France?

Yes, although as soon as the vehicle is registered it could be moved hundreds of miles away.
Info on where the registrations relate to can be found on the DVLA website here.

The problem(?) with car registrations is the fisrt letters are supposed to show the area where the vehicle was purchased etc. I drive a company car which was registered on Camden, but I don`t live or work in Camden! So what is the point?
