Car selling tips

Goober11 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 4th August 2005, 09:08

Hi I am looking for some car selling tips, such as:

- the best place to advertise;
- how much to ask for;
- what to say in the advert;
- general dos and don`ts with regard to selling e.g. when to part with the car on receipt of a cheque.

Any thoughts on this would be useful.

My car is a 7 year old 3 series BMW and has some very minor body work to be done - is it worth my while spending money to do this work or will I not recoup the cost?

Thanks

Autotrader is,without a doubt,the best option.

You`re car`s description is far too vague to advise a selling price,but Autotrader`s website can help you there as well ( valuation section )
Sort the bodywork before you sell,definitely.
A prospective buyer will always assume it`s going to cost more to repair than it probably will,so you will lose out.

One tip for selling in Autotrader is to choose a nice background for your car`s photo.
A well thought out photo makes your car stand out amongst the hordes of photos taken on non-descript driveways.

As for payment,you`re car isn`t going to be worth that much,so I would insist on cash.
Nothing else,cash.

Funny you should mention that (the photo thing), I was looking through autotrader and Ebay for a new motor and most of the ones I ended up looking at were photoed on like a gravel drive of a stately home or something like that. Turned out most of them were 2 up 2 downs on an esate, but it got me looking.

Subliminally I must have been thinking `Rich people will look after their cars.....`

As soon as your ad appears, you`ll be inundated with phone calls from "Car Search" type agencies who`ll tell you that they have clients very interested in your car and they`ll put you in touch with them if you send them £100.

Tell them to bog off.

Justify your price - WHY are you asking for £xxxx? Because its got central locking FSH etc..... if you catch my drift.

Also be as honest as possible.

One suggestion is to get yourself a cheap PAYG mobile, we sold a car a few years back for my stepdad, advertised it in autotrader and exchange and mart.

We were getting phone calls for months after, many at 2 or 3 in the morning >:( even threatening phone calls from one bloke who rang us almost everyday from day 1, couldn`t understand why we had sold it before he put in an offer :/

At least this way you can bin the phone once it`s sold.

Also put a note in the advert stating no canvasers/ad agencies to call you, they are a pain and a rip off.

All the best

Ger.
