Which Coolpix Camera?

flyingmonkey (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 14th June 2005, 11:42

Hi

I have been looking into getting a digital camera for when my girlfriend and I go to Canada in a few weeks.

A few people have recommended Nikon Coolpix cameras but I am unsure of which one to get.

I have a budget of £200 and will be using it for general holiday photos plus landscape pictures and some action shots of when we go whale spotting and horse riding, etc. I would also prefer a zoom lense camera.

Also, how many pics would I be able to fit on to a 1gb card? I will need to store a fortnight`s worth of pics on the camera.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Nick

Don`t limit yourself to the Nikon range - the new Canon A510 and A520 are both cracking cameras...IMHO better than the comparable Coolpix models.

Have a look on:

www.dpreview.com

and

www.stevesdigicams.com

They are both full of quality reviews, with the all important sample photos.

I`ve set my budget to £200 cos I`ll also need the extra memory card and it`s coming out of our holiday `pot`. After the holiday the camera will hardly get used except for parties and weddings, etc.

I`ve looked at Steve`s Camera site and read many reviews but I much prefer the opinion of `real` people, if you knopw what I mean.

Thanks

Nick

I looked at the Nikons.
I chose a Sony cybershot instead.
The specs are pretty much all the same but I think the Sonys look better built.
Chuffed with it.
So damned easy to use.
I use a 128mb and easily get 50+ pictures on it.
A 1gb card would easly do you a fortnight, unless to take pictures of every damned thing.

Depends on mega pixels and compression.

1 week at Lake Garda with a 3.2 MP Konica HD310Z (no longer made I think) and a 256MB card. Filled the card with over 300 pics at full resolution but highest compression.

The picture files range in size from 250 KB to 750 KB depending on how much they could be compressed.

So I`d get well over 1000 pics from a 1GB card :D

Note: you`ll snap away much more with a digital camera than with a film camera.

I know you said your budget was £200 but unbeatable.co.uk are doing a Sony package deal.
Cybershot camera (£155 on it`s own) and Sony printer for £236.00.
Saving of over £50 on their cost seperately.

I use www.unbeatable.photos.co.uk for my online processing as well.

Forgot to say: nip into your local Boots, they`ve got some on sale at about half price.

Sjb

Have Boots got cameras in general on sale or a specific one?

Thanks

Even if your budget is £200, look around you can get some great deals IMHO Cannon make the best cameras by far and I have found a cheaper one can from them can produce great images, having said that my small digi cam is a casio EX Z4 must be about £200 by now great little cam bid old screen on the back to let you see the photos nicely.

Best bet go to jessops or dixons or whatever play around with the cameras find a range that you like then shop for it on the net or out in Canada. Everyone has there own opinions find one that you like the look and use of. In the long run will mean you get much better quality photos as you will play around with it more as you get used to it.
