Page 1 of minimum wage to be abolished?

when the minimum wage bill was made law, the conservatives all voted against it.
michael howard said that the next conserative goverment would "let market forces set wages with no interference from goverment, and the law would be changed to allow employers to set wages at either the present amount or lower than now"
im lucky that i don`t rely on minimum wage. but millions do and for them to loose their rights do a decent wage is not on.
i tried talking to my local canidate from the conservative party about the minimum wage.
he tried to avoid the subject, and speak about other things instead?

For the minimum wage to be abolished, a Conservative government would need to get a piece of legislation through the Commons and the Lords. If, by some miracle, the Tories are elected, they would only have a tiny majority and any bill to remove the minimum wage would likely be defeated after the first or second reading. Like it or not, the minimum wage is here to stay and is something that Labour should be telling people about.

Have yet to see any candiate either at my home (due to working away, thats not so implausible, though The Horned One hasnt reported anyone at our door) or at my digs.

I still have no idea who to vote for, as both sides have proven adept in giving with one hand & taking with the other*.

At the rate it is going I feel a slight drift to a party thats better known by its 3 initials**, purely out of apathy for the other 2.

*You could also fit saying one thing & meaning\doing another into that sentence.

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

We have only have the conservative candidate come round, stop and talk to people, and he has one of the safest seats in parliament. So he could sit at home and do the crossword if he wanted to.

Nothing from the lib-dems, a single sheet through the post from both the labour candidate and the labour candidate two seats away ?? EDIT: forgot UKIP, had a sheet from them too.

Being a good old labour supporter (thought I was new labour till discovered it stood for Lying, scheming basta***ds), I am surprised to find I`m going to vote for the man, not the party and go for the sitting conservative MP Douglas Hogg. Always thought he was a prat, but last couple years he keeps saying what I think (apart from about the nasty nasty fox hunting people) and he lead the anti-Iraq war campaign in parliament. With all the partys being as corrupt as each other, you have to go for someone you feel you can at least trust to be truthful.

When blairs gone I may have to rethink this. But not till then.

I saw the Lib Dem candidate Mr Gill on Sunday after Tigers defeat. I told if if he could get the result overturned I would vote for him. He said he could not. I told him I would not vote for him. Seemed like a nice bloke though.

Acutely I quite like the idea of really voting for a person and not a party, I know that is what we do now, but in effect we really vote for a party and not the candidate. And that is a corruption of Parliament. Maybe we should ban partys altogether.

Much of this election campaign has been about Blair and `a vote for Blair...` which only really to the voters in Sedgefield. You should really vote for the candidate and what he/she stands for, rather the party leader but this is a sad side effect of the soundbite driven `presidential` politics which currently exists in Britain. :(

One of our local conservative candidates campaign issues is:

`Ed Vaizey actively campaigned against Didcots inclusion in The Book of Crap towns`

It made me laugh so much he almost got my vote. Nah not really but it was funny though

I kid you not (although it was worded in a much more funny way on the campaign leaflet, with the caption underneath a particularly s***ty picture of didcot).

I doubt the Tories would actually abolish the minimum wage, but if they don`t support it in principle, there`s a danger they could just let it wither away, allowing inflation to render it meaningless.
