How do you check who is in a West End performance ?

Wad (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 23rd April 2005, 10:00

My wife wants to see Guys and Dolls in London, but would really like to see Ewan McGregor in it. Does anyone have any idea if there`s a way to check which performances he`ll be in. I`m assuming he wont do them all, must need a day off ?

Cheers
Wad.

Ewan is staying in the show until November I think. In theory, he will appear in all 8 performances a week (6 nights +2 matinees), leaving Sundays off. In practice, who knows? Some stars are very good at keeping up with all performances, or the theatre will clearly state e.g "Michael Ball will not appear on Thursdays", others (Martine McCutcheon, Elaine Paige) are more unpredictable, taking odd days and afternoons off without much notice.

Bottom line, you can`t tell (and you don`t have any comeback (e.g. a refund) if you book to see Ewan and get there to find he`s not on). The theatre might have more info, but most don`t commit themselves at this stage (i.e. before the show opens). It`s usually just a case of cross your fingers!

There are some obvious expedients.
Avoid matinee performances ( more chance of understudies )
Avoid weekday performances, especially early in the week ( more chance of the stars taking time off after weekend shows )

Apart from that, you`ve no guarantee and zero recourse I`m afraid.

You can,occasionally,strike it lucky though.
The performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang we went to see was Anton Rogers` last performance.
The cast has a little surprise for him at the end of the show.
Lights went up,previous cast members appeared on stage (Michael Ball etc.) and they had a wee celebration involving the audience.
