Ba****d my timing belt just went kucking faboom

Well all good things come to an end.
My trusty 13 year old Sierra 1.8GLX is now destined for the scrappy :(
Belt went and although the 1.8 CVH engine is notorious for f***ing valves and crown when the belt goes I thought f*** it, £14 for a belt I`ll give it a try and see what happens.
End result, engine runs but on two cylinders and it sounds like a bag of angry spanners :)
So off to the dealers tomorrow for a couple of test drives on a Mondeo then a Focus.

Good job a couple of policies are maturing :D

First thing I do when I buy a new car, well, a new old car, is change the timing belt. Anything else is asking for trouble!

I knackered up my trusty old Sierra (some years ago mind) in exactly the same way. And it did initially appear that it was gonna be okay. No real sign of any damage but it never ran properly.

LOL :D

just after i passed my test i bought a 1.6cvh escort (y reg) and took an ex girlfriend
to heathrow. all the way back i did between 80-90mph....no probs.

went to rehearsals with my band the next day, and on the way back the belt went
at a set of traffic lights....me being young and foolish just thought that the car had stalled
and tried (in vain) to turn the ignition over for about 10 minutes.....luckily, my mate was
behind me in his car, so we attached a tow rope to mine and pulled it along with me
trying to "bump" start it every few yards....we even went at about 20mph which when
my car lurched, broke the bloody tow rope.

i had a mechanic relative come and look at it and when i told him what i`d done, grimaced
and said it`s gonna cost me a fortune to put right......when he took it apart, all that was
needed was one new valve and a new belt....cost me £50 all in :D

Ste.

........is that gasoline i smell?

Mine once went a couple of years ago. The car was parked - wouldnt start, just that awful whining sound, tried about half a dozen times then called the AA. Mechanic was amazed no damage had been done to cylinders/valves and suggested I buy a lottery ticket as my luck was definitely in. I didn`t win :(

Had the TB go on two different models of Cavalier - Each time no other damage. :D

Work Peugeot van 3 weeks from end of warranty (year 1), TB went, *KABOOM* engine totally fcuked as a result & off road for about 3 weeks.

The new modeo with the Duratec (petrol) or Duratorque (deisel) engines have got timing chains instead of belts. If that sways you decision at all.

Had one go on an old Citroen works van, the water pump seized up and stripped all the teeth off it doing about 80, never seen so much black smoke in my life, never did get the stains out of those trousers (:¦

All the best

Ger.

Superted :)

TBH a Mondeo 1.8 5 door is what I really fancy.
Going for a test drive in the next two days or so and hopefully if that goes well I will get one.

Piggin` nora. :(
I`m phoning garage in the morning, see if they can fit me in!

My car was bought from the car auctions beginning of the year. It`s had all new plugs (which I was told must`ve been in there since the car was new... oops!) oil change, air filter, welding, new radiator etcetcetc.
I booked it in to have the timing done as the car is running rich as hell and all other checks failed to find the cause, but the garage never did it as the mechanic said it just needed the oil change etc. Hmmmmmmmm.
I`m not chancing timing belt going! I`ll have it done, to kinda be on the safe side! No idea how long other one been in there. EEK!
