Looking to buy a larger tv set. Would anyone consider a projection tv or in your opinion is tube always the best quality?

Tube is better than projection, unless you`re looking to use a barn size room. If money no object consider flat-screen?

Totally agree - to make the most of a projection TV you need a massive room, and preferably one where you can black out the windows.
I popped into our local Sony Centre the other day and they had a massive projection TV on display, and the picture quality, well for me anyway, was pants, because of the masses of light streaming in through the windows.
If you`ve got the capacity for it, go for it. But I`d have to agree with James - go for a flatscreen TV if space is an issue.

Ive today been looking at the new 36" toshiba tv, the currys guy "claimed" it to be 5.1 dolby digital , i dont suppose anyone knows anything about this and whether it really is 5.1 ??.

Toshiba definitely do a 36" DD widescreen telly, and it should also be equipped with component video inputs as well (if you`ve got matching outputs on your player you`re laughing - best ever picture quality).
Simple thing to do - check the Dolby logo on the TV carefully - if it does have 5.1 capability then it must, by law, have the Dolby Digital logo to authenticate it. Don`t accept `virtual` or `psuedo` or `DSP` or any of the others - you know the logo to look for, yes ?!
If it has, what sort of price are they talking about Markster ?

I wouldn`t buy that set - the sound is pretty good, although a little flat, and the picture is nothing special.
Have a look around for the new Panasonic range of sets. The 36PG50 has a 36 inch flat widescreen tube, and it has dts surround sound. And yes, I am sure - I work in a shop which sells them.
The picture isn`t brilliant when you`re stood about 2 feet away, but the set was designed to be viewed from a distance. From around 6 feet, the picture is amazing and cannot be beaten for the price!
The set costs around £2000 - £2500, but you could probably find it cheaper if you looked around.
If you click this link it will take you to Panasonic`s UK website and to the TV I am rambling about. There is a small picture of it as well as all the details of its many features. Go and check it out in a showroom. I don`t think you`ll be disappointed.

try www.inter-discount.co.uk. they`re selling a Hitachi WS 36" with DD and DTS for £1400. Go to John lewis and they will price-match internet prices and if anything should go wrong-it`s easier to get in contact with Johnewis than an internet store. Have a good one.

Yes you do need a reasonable sized room for a projection tv, but if you get a decent one (CRT or bright DLP) they really do rock.
Unfortunately you *will* have to black out the windows as light is a real killer of the fun. But it really *is* like having a cinema in your own home. ;-)

As you say there is virtual` or `psuedo` (this is the philips 36" which first made me aware of checking details).
I dont want to pay out for a 36" to then find i have to fork out for an amp and 6 speakers. I am worried about getting a tv which turns out NOT to be TRUE DD 5.1 , speaking to the guy in currys he was telling me they were all DD 5.1 which i know isn`t right, he was just telling me what i wanted to hear.
Can someone tell me a way to truely tell if a Tv is true 5.1, clayts can you tell me the logo i need to watch for?. Whats else on the set itself can i look for??.

ps. price, cheapest I found it was £1499(my limit) (most are £1699) which i thought was good. I was origonally going to buy a 32" sony nicam then an amp and speakers which took it up to that price anyway.
Unfortunately ive now been unable to find this price again and think this was on electricalwarehouse.co.uk but the site is now down!, i hope they havent gone bust!!!
