Page 1 of looking for a laser beam for an invention

Hi, i`m knocking together a home made invention, it needs a laser beam projected in a straight line, (not just a dot like you get with those laser pointer pens) i`ve seen something similar with diy laser spirit levels, and i`ve also seen green lasers for sale that claim to project a beam.
Has anyone got advice on what to look for or what to buy?

Yeah that was one of the options i was considering, dosen`t look the right shape though. Do u think this would be a better bet than a green laser?

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.
