WARNING: DVD `Side Effects`

Kevo (Competent) posted this on Monday, 28th May 2001, 15:01

I`ve owned a DVD player for 2 years now and have experienced the following `side effects`.

Anybody else experienced the following or other `side effcts`?....

Buying DVDs becomes unusually addictive. You find yourself buying titles that you would never dream of buying on VHS.

You may even buy titles that were on TV the night before (I have)

VHS looks 100 times worse.

Dolby Pro-Logic, which you once thought was `the bees knees` now sounds on a par with mono.

You actually start to study the spec on the back of the box before buying.

You will probably NEVER want to watch a film on VHS or TV ever again.

Widescreen: Initially you may hate it but believe me it WILL grow on you and within about a month or two nothing less than WS anamorphic will do.

You will start to see people who have not yet converted to DVD as very inferior human beings to yourself.

Each DVD viewing beomes more of an `event`, where the timing has to be just right, when you know you won`t be disturbed at all for a couple of hours.

If I`ve missed anything out, then please feel free to add to the list.

Hiya

I agree with all you have said, but ive found myself trying to convert people that havnt got a dvd player into getting one, I have even had to go and get my self a new big widescreen tv so i can watch them on,I find i have to get a dvd everyweek or i get withdrawal symptoms i must get a least one a week and if it is a bargin then even better.

What about `special feature syndrome`, you know, crap film but look at the size of those special features! C`mon, we`ve all done it. My most recent is The Sphere. There were voices in my head saying it must be a good film it`s got a commentary. Stay away people!!

You have got these side effects down to an exact science, and I applaud you. Yup, every single one of those symptoms applies to me, without fail.

Saturday nights are `new DVD night` now (whereas before it may have been watch the new one on Sky Premier - my Sky Movie package went out the window a long time ago !).

As for the event itself - telephone unplugged, amplifier up (as long as the neighbours are out), lights off, choc ices, crisps and soft drinks to hand : film first, features after.

When people buy new videos at work I sneer - I`m a total DVD snob now. ProLogic - pah ! Nothing less than DD will do. I even steer clear of DVDs with ProLogic on, as I feel I`m being conned.

This is one sick addiction we`re all blighted with. My credit card starts whimpering every time I go near anywhere selling DVDs - I have to have a new one every week, or I`ll go mad.

I share the majority of `symptoms` as described above. Another worrying aspect of DVD ownership is the `neglect` shown to my record collection since buying my first player last November. The amount of albums and cds I buy has been greatly reduced by those pesky little things in the Amaray cases. Though I guess no one ever has enough disposable income?!

Yep, I`ve got to agree with you all.

I even have multiple copies of DVDs now just because of different features. Sad to admit, but I have three HALLOWEEN 5s (Reg1, Reg2 and a Reg0 Limited Edition Tin), two MATRIXs and three AMERICAN PIEs.

Even worse are the BUFFY boxsets. I already own them all on video, but have just shelled out £91 for the Season 1 and 2 DVD sets. Shocking...

True also is the statement about buying DVDs you wouldn`t even consider buying on VHS. Idle Hands and Deep Rising spring to mind.

I bet our credit card companies love us, though :)

Seems I`m not alone (didn`t think I would be, somehow!) and there are some who are `worse off` than me.

Philly, I wish I could help. £ 160 over 4 days is pushing the boat out a bit for a 15 year old. I`m a lot older than you and in full-time employment and have never spent that much on DVDs in such a short spcae of time.

You must have a well paid paper round ! (only kidding).

I don`t think there`s any hope for any of us, so...

Long may the `addiction` continue.

Yeah, my "addiction" seems to be getting out of hand too, I seem to buy far too much on the internet, CDs, DVDs, Tapes....

I use to just buy films that I liked or old classics, but have started buying stuff that I just think is "cool" like the Rambo Trilogy....

arghhh, must stop... and it doesn`t help that in a few months time I start my placement job for my uni course (more money on crap), no doubt the first things I`ll buy are a DVD player (I`m sick of watching DVDs on my PC!), Widescreen TV, and a guitar..... perfect... :)

and Philly, £160 in 4 days is impressive.... wish i could do that...
