Who can explain the offside rule ??

Mike J T (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 3rd February 2005, 09:18

No this isn`t an opportunity for some long-winded explaination of "it an attacking .... blah, blah". With so many interpretations and midification of the rule coming out every season it surprising so many goal/disallowed goals get argued over.

To me one very simple way to avoid the problem is "SCRAP THE RULE". What would be lost from the game. If Arsenal want to go and defend half-way up the pitch, let them. If the attacking side want to stick a forward on the goal line, let them.

Any body else think this the easiest solution. (Plus my wife would be able to understand it !!)

Let`s hear a woman`s interpretation of it Aslan.
Does it mean the woman who pushes her way into the queue for a shoe sale ?

I certainly don`t think they should scrap the offside rule.

However, if they did, it would quite possibly make TACTICS more important. How far up the pitch will we defend? Shall we put a striker on the goal line? Do we need to man mark? etc.

Putting a ;) smiley at the end of every post you make doesn`t make you right!

They should just make it the way it was.
This active/inactive stuff is ridiculous.
Any player, even if he`s just standing still,is interfering with play in that he will distract the attentions of the opposing defenders/keeper.
Henry is one of the best exponents of this rule.
You`ll see him stand still in an offside position.
When the ball is played forward he`ll stand still and raise his arms in a "not taking part" manner.
You watch the defenders though.
He`s diverted their attention for that split second and all of a sudden they`re a yard behind the guy who is attacking.

Stupid frigging rule.

I tell you something else about the current offside rule.
I`ve yet to see any evidence of them `erring on the side of the attacker`.
We have a grading ref in our office.
He tells us the linesmen/refs are terrified to `err on the side of the striker`.
They know that if they do and the striker scores,or is taken down by the last defender (which is an instant red) they are going to get severe grief.
So they bottle it and raise the flag.
That`s from the `horse`s mouth`.
So what the frig is the point in paying lipservice to `erring on the side of the striker`. :/

Put it back the way it was.
Yer in an offside position, yer offside.
Simple as that.
I couldn`t care less if you were tying your laces/having a w***,so you weren`t `active`.
You were offside you caahnt. :p

I concur.

But if the active/inactive thingy was applied in "my" team`s favour I wouldn`t mind, whether or not I though it was right... :D

Ah,but the right to be fickle is paramount to supporters.
I hate diving, but I`ve been known to celebrate the odd `cheeky` penalty in our favour...

Without the offside rule, attackers could just camp the penalty box the whole game, and do we really need a Gary Lineker in every team? How boring would that be? :)

Besides, nothing is more exciting in a game than a team on the break, with that perfect pass beating the offside trap. It rules!

I think the active/inactive clarification is exactly that, a clarification. The offside rule has for years required the offending party to be interfering with play.

What is good, is the latest change which requires there to be daylight between the last man (or rather 2nd from last man). All we need now is linesmen that can bloody keep up with play. :p

Man,don`t get me started on that.... >:(
I can forgive linesmen making errors when a ball is humped forward 30 yards as,in the time it takes for them to look from where the ball is played to the striker,he may have moved offside.
What really gets my goat is when they make a mistake when the ball is passed 5 or 10 yards. :/ >:(
Our resident ref was also telling me that he`s noticed more and more linesmen `anticipating` not being able to keep up,so they often position themselves a yard or so in front of play, which makes judging an offside even more precarious...
It`s a joke I tell ya.
You should hear some of the arguments between us and our resident ref in here..
Gets quite heated sometimes.
The conclusion is always the same though.
Useless twats. :D
