Ebay auction - is this genuine?

i88o (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 2nd January 2005, 20:20

Just been browsing on ebay and saw this:

Is this legit or not? I was under the assumption that you couldnt get Star Wars with DTS sound. I must admit though it does look pretty good if a bit flimsy, but then again the R1 version I bought wasn`t up to the usual standards!

Given that THX and DTS are rival sound formats, and THX was developed by LucasFilm for Star Wars, then this is very unlikely to be legtimate.

Ebay is crammed full of dodgy Asian Collectors edition DVD sets. Ebay should get sued for allowing this to happen.

This guy has a feedback of only 37 and he`s also selling illlegal hacks of Sky viewing cards by the sound of it!

Steer well clear. ALWAYS CHECK THE FEEDBACK FIRST!

it`s got to be said, with ebay it`s mostly common sense, i`ve had to claim money back due to non delivery about 4 times, and apart from the first time (paypals 30 claim limit is a hard learning curve, luckily i only lost $10) i`ve got my money back each time, each time i`ve not recieved goods it`s always been something coming from the states, whilst anything i get from hong kong/singapore etc always seems to be delivered within about a week (often faster than stuff sent from within the uk) simple rules to live by, Don`t order anything from abroad if it`s an expensive item, read description carefully, even if it says "original" and the seller has exellent feedback, trawl the feedback, remember, asian bootlegs are factory made, to look at them they look perfect, the givaway is unoficial packaging + they are often on dvd-5`s we may realise they are fakes but 99% of joe public won`t, so look for that 1 piece of feedback that say`s they aren`t originals. remember FEEDBACK FEEDBACK FEEDBACK is you`re best friend, if you get the slightest doubt about something don`t bid, the item will allways come up again.
back to the subject of fake dvd`s, whilst i wouldn`t bother buying movies from these guys i do buy tv episode seasons, buffy for instance, i started getting into it, so i got a season a week from ebay, asian collectors editions, the most i paid was £15 inc p&p, for something i`m probably only gonna watch once, maybe twice, it`s worth getting them, (i baught the originals of season 1 & 2 + seasons 1/2/3/4 of angel @ around £20-£25 a set) the picture quality on the asian releases is NOT as good as the official release, but certainly not bad either (unlike x-files season 1/2/3 which are awfull quality) but on the other hand, the asian boxset of taken has better picture quality than the Offician R2 release & the box is miles better than the R2 :/ but again, it`s supplied on dvd-5`s so you get 1 episode per disc spread over 10 dvd`s rather than 6.

in over 200 trades/sales i`ve only ever needed to leave 1 neg, so by my reckoning thats about a 99.5% ratio of good to bad.

1 other thing tho, allways check postage costs, especialy from abroad, for instance, i wanted a specific type of bluetooth dongle for my laptop, i needed one that could lie flat against the back usb port, so i could leave it in when i stick the laptop into my rucksack, so i found the one i wanted and checked the seller out, he wanted £12 for shipping, which is very high, should be more like £2.50 tops, so i only bid 0.01p knowing that the trader is covering his back (& his costs) via the shipping, and i got it at that price, so i got a decent bluetooth dongle for £12.01 which i reckon is pretty good ;)
