What are pirate dvds like? Has anyone bought any? What is the quality? Normal or crap or better than normal? I know they`re pirate but with the prices some retailers sell at, it don`t sound too bad. What about the covers? A pirate company claims to have all its dvds brand new and sealed.
Arrr! thar she blows! Shiver me timbers!
l haven`t seen a good priate film since Crimson Pirate!
Whos in this one?
I never dared buy any, but I borrowed Episode 1 (DVD silver) off a guy at work and it wasn`t too bad. Probably recorded directly from a laserdisc version, but the menu and chapter selections were exactly like an official release. The cover too, was glossy and appealing, but don`t ever think that they can compete with "real" DVD`s in terms of picture quality, as this was a little bit blurry. it wasn`t blotchy like Video Cd`s, but the image was distinctly soft and unclear. Imagine having VHS quality picture with DD5.1 sound on a disc, because that`s basically what they are. My colleague says the titles you can buy that have already been released properly (Crouching Tiger etc) are much better, as the source material is more compatible, but I can`t confirm this. Not really recommended, but if you desperately want The Phantom Menace, then at least the case will look good in your collection.
The other day I borrowed Crouching Tiger, Get Carter, Vertical Limit and Charlies Angels. The answer is "don`t bother" as, they look the part, but were all poor quality and not worth buying.
Certainly don`t bother if there`s a legit DVD version of the same film. The pirate discs are invariably of poorer quality, and often aren`t much cheaper than the real thing.

Back in Asia, there are a lot of pirate DVD, These are mainly pirate copies of original DVD/LD. The price in Asia is usually £4 to £5. I saw yahoo auction and there is a lot of Asia dealer auctioning pirate dvd for tenner. It`s a complete rip off!!
About the quality, it is definitely better than VCD, VCR. It even has Dolby Digital. I happened to borrow a private copy of Matrix with my original Matrix. The picture is only slightly softer, the surround mix is definitely inferior htan the original.
By the way, PLEASE D

I got a pirate copy of TAXI 2 on Yahoo auctions. It worked fine, proper picture quality and DTS & DD soundtracks. It only had Jap subtitiles tho which was a p***er as its a French language film.
It came in a blank box with a fairly rough picture on the disc. The problem is that it was described as a Region 2 when I bought it, so I returned it and got a refund (tenner).
Hi , They are commonly known as ``dvd silvers``
``Dvd silvers`` are pressed DVD discs, made in the same way as an original. They come in 2 grades A and B.
Grade A comes in box with covers, printed discs, and are shrinkwrapped, These are factory made to a high specification, from Malaysia (where 10 factories are there, with machines costing £500,000 so i`m told
Picture and sound quality aint quite the same as the original.
BUT VERY GOOD
They are not cds or vcds or anything else. They are 99% dvd, with proper menus etc..
Be careful there are some dodgy silvers out there. buy grade A , you wont go wrong
DVD silvers are worth every penny!!
If you buy from malayisa expect to pay around £5 each, if Uk then around £9 each

Okay, gang. I`m no moderator, and I have no love for the Studios. I`m all in favour of the world being zone-free, and I have no objections to home recording.
However, what`s under discussion here is strictly illegal. As rich, bloated and corrupt as Hollywood is, the Studios are protected by international laws that also protect the rest of us from being ripped off, having our intellectual property stolen, etc. You can turn a blind eye to rules of law being bent a little, but video and DVD piracy doesn`t do any of us any favours (even if the window of opportunity the pirates take is of the Studios` own making). Remember that the guys doing the pirating aren`t film-loving heroes striking a blow for the common man, they`re most likely using the profits from these operations to finance more anti-social behaviour. Remember as well that the Studios can act like spoilt brats. That threat about piracy affecting future film production is no idle threat. Believe it or not, Studio execs are not in the movies as an art form, they`re out to make a profit, a bigger profit than the pirates probably dream of, and they don`t want anybody to get a slice of their action. As appealing as DVDSilvers are, they can only harm the legitimate market.
