cinemas - too expensive???

Moo.. (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 10th April 2001, 13:53

does anyone else think that going to the cinema is too bloody expensive? i can accept that prices will go up with advances in technology, but even so the best part of six quid seems a bit steep to me. its even worse if you take your bird. with popcorn etc on top of tickets your looking at around £20!!! where will it end? i can see five years down the line us having to pay a tenner as standard!!! rediculous!

what i do think is a tremendous idea is to do what the ozzies do. every tuesday they have cheap day where all day prices are half price even in the evening.

also i think the way they do seating arrangements is better as is the americans. i much prefer an `open-plan` arrangement where you dont get designated a seat you just sit anywhere. although it can be a ball-ache when you arrive late and people leave a seat between each other.

Well, my local Odeon does the whole of Tuesday for £3.50, and you can usually sit where you like unless it`s likely to be packed or very popular. What country did you say you were from?

The Odeon (except the London ones) and most independent cinemas are usually much cheaper than the multiplexes. I`ve never paid more than £4 to get into the cinema and would probably walk away from the box office if I was asked to!

Also, if you`re looking to save money, don`t buy cinema popcorn, buy a big bag of Butterkist or something at a supermarket before you go in.

i dont myself buy any conffectionary from cinemas (i take my own from home) but was just generalising.

regarding independant cinemas, i dont know what your local one is like but mine is s***e! ive a better set up in my room!

i just feel that we`re been screwed left right and centre to see movies at the multiplexes.....

Bums on seats = moolah for Warners.

Stick to independent cinemas, guys - more atmos. OK you don`t get the latest barnstorming DTS 6.1 sound, but at least you don`t get mugged by Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny at the box office....

Oh I wish I was back in Loughborough with it`s fantastic Curzon Cinema - cheap on Mondays and Thursdays (full of students, but cheap - great atmosphere).

And they used to charge `normal prices` for fizzy pop.

You can shove soul-less, warehouses like multiplexes right up yer....

...then again, you can stay at home and watch DVD :-)

My local cinema is the west end of London, which is very expensive to go and see something with wife. A night out can exceed £20, which of course, is the MAXIMUM price to pay for a brand new dvd.

Pick the region 1 copy and it will out often earlier than the cinema!

Although around the 4-5 pound mark my local Sheffield UGC (ex-Virgin) is damn fine place - I`ve never been to a cinema with such a good rate of decent in the rows of seats and space for your legs and little plates on each screen enterance telling you the projector type, sound system etc.. The gap between seats allows some moron-late-comer to walk between rows without the need for yourself to stand up and let them pass.

An odean in Blackpool opened a few years ago and sucks - they still designed it with minimal leg room..I dont mind paying £5 if they dont skimp on quality and comfort.

Anyway, it aint a cinema forum so I`ll stop gloating now.
