Customs Charges - Do they start dead on £18?

phlogiston (Competent) posted this on Monday, 23rd August 2004, 21:01

Does this include the delivery charge? Also does ticking the gift box still mean you can get up to £36? I fancy The Sopranos Region 4 but they are about £18.56 or so.

Any info appreciated.

Yes £18 is £18, £17.99 is another matter all together.

Customs have wised up to companies ticking gift boxes & undervalueing goods.

So unless someone is willing to send you the item as a gift £18 is £18, lucky that way I know a few people in US & Canada that can do that for me.

The £18 limit applies to the value of the package excluding any delivery charges. A £15 DVD with £5 postage is under the limit, a £19 DVD with £1 postage isn`t.

However, if the package is over the £18 threshold, they use the total value including postage when working out the tax you owe. Also, these limits are strictly enforced - even if the box set is only a few pennies over £18, you can still get stung for it. :(

Yep, but only if it`s a genuine gift (i.e. from a private individual to another private individual). They`re getting wise to companies that do it.

There are still a few companies around that mark packages as gifts or with a lower value, if you want a Region 4 DVD then use DVD Crave as I recieved the Indiana Jones Boxset from them last week and it got through no problem.
