as everyone knows recordable dvd will eventually come out at an affordable price, altthough theres going to be a battle betwen two versions of the format to become the standard.

now what occured to me was that when they do become mainstream what will the recording quality really be like? will it be identical to the quality from your tv set? if so i dont see that this will be that much of a jump from vhs. a decent tape recorded in standard play is pretty great!! or alternatively will your dvd player somehow be able to improve the picture quality when recorded upon?

also does anyone know what the storgae medium will be? will you record onto a blank dvd? or will all dvd players incorporate some kind of Tivo storage facility?

interesting question - I reckon for pre-recorded stuff DVD is well on the way to replacing VHS, but as a recording device, it could only hope to do that if it was to offer significantly better quality than vhs. If you have digital TV then absolutely perfect copies could be made, but recording from analogue might not.
Then you have to consider the possibility that there`s no way the TV companies would let you do this - I`m thinking some kind of Macrovision-alike scotching signal would also be broadcast to protect their copyright and that of their film suppliers.

The recordable dvd player is due to come out late this year. Give it about 6 months to drop the price down and by spring/summer 2002 No one will talk about vhs

l don`t know about anyones else but l rarely record anything. And if l do, l usually dont get around to watching it!

DVD`s r great for pre recordings but i dont think anything will be able to stand up against the reusability, ease of use and fairly good copies Vhs make.Also id like to say that VHS is a very cheap way of making home recordings as well!
Can u see a camcorder for about £200 that takes recordable dvd`s in the near future?
no didnt think so, thats why VHS will stay top of the board for home recording!
CHEAP, REUSABLE, RELIABLE, GOOD LIFE SPAN, AND ALSO EVERYONE HAS THEM ALREADY AND I CANT SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE CHUCKING OUT THEIR VIDEO RECORDERS JUST YET TO UPGRADE TO A DVD RECORDER!
EG. TAPE DECKS R STILL WITH US ON HI FI`S EVEN THOUGH CD HAS STOILE THE MARKET FOR PRE RECORDED MATERIAL.

I personally think that hard-disc recorders (Tivo type devices) should become standard for time-shifting, while recordable DVDs (in some form) will be used for archiving programmes you want to keep. In place of your current VCR you`ll have a device that incorporates hard disc storage, digital TV reception (with CAM slot for optional ONDigital decoder and/or Sky receiver), and DVD recording and playback. All for under £150 (well I can dream, can`t I?)

On copyright - one thing film companies and broadcasters will have to learn to accept is that you *cannot* put the genie back in the bottle. With analogue VHS, people are used to recording and copying what they like, when they like, and artificially restricting the functionality of new digital technologies is bound to hamper take-up.

Regional coding on DVDs is bad enough - imagine how people will feel if they`re told they can`t record a film off Sky Movies to watch later! There seems to be a determined effort to push a "DIVX model" onto digital TV and video - and we all know what happened to DIVX.

Analogue TV transmission has maybe seven years life left. I beleive that when recordable DVD comes out it will start slow and be expensive but as more and more equipment goes over to digital the good old tape will be finished. I have a CD writter on my PC and CD player in my car. Blank CD`s are cheaper than cassettes. I can`t remember when I last listened to a cassette. The same WILL happen to VHS.

I think that DVD will eventually replace VHS, but it will take a hell of a lot longer than most people here seem to think. People are being a little too hopeful here, realistically I think it might take absolutely ages before everyone gets rid of their VHS machines.

Whats the point of getting rid of them if they work fine? I dont think everybody will just burn their VHS boxes just because there is a better thing out there.

I also think that it will take forever for the price to erode to the same level as VHS, so most people will probably just stick with what they can afford.

On the other hand, shiny discs would be nice. Oh and I would be able to see my face in them! Joy!

How many people still own a Turntable?
Not as many as own CD/Minidisk players, I`ll bet!

The point is, it is in the nature of technology to become obsolete.

(I know, the PC Keyboard layout argument KO`s this but that only works `cause we`re all such sheep, Baaaa....:-)

Personally, I don`t really care about VHS - I`ll only buy DVD for films now `cos they`re (mostly) good quality/long lasting and my present blank VHS cassettes will do me fine. So (Point 2) there`s no money in VHS anymore - certainly no growth, so what`s going to happen? VHS players become fewer, Hard disk/DVD recording achieves critical mass in about 5 years or so and VHS becomes the preserve of those poor sods that can`t afford the new stuff (as usual).

Remember Betamax??? Once VHS was public domain, retailers went where the money was. Betamax was arguably the better technical format, but it died `cause the market - especially the rental market, went VHS. Point 3 - people vote with their wallets/purses & popularity breeds contempt (just look at the `my kits` better than your kit` threads). Some people will always buy what their next door neighbour has simply because of it`s popularity - not its specification. How many times have we all been in shops and listened to conversations over kit that basically ended `...so it`s loud, expensive and lights up like a Christmas tree - I`ll have it!!" DOH!!!!!!

As for DVD recording, Have you heard about FMD disks? 10 layers and a potential for Terabytes of info storage. I`d wait a bit....

Why should I get rid of my VHS ?

I like the way the quality stays the same after watching the film about 10 times, I like the lines that grace the screen every now and then and surprise me, I like the idea of fast forwarding and stopping and playing and fast forwarding to get to a scene, I like the idea of pausing a scene and seeing the screen wobble and again have those nice lines on it, I like the idea of being able to record Eastenders and then never have time to watch it because the next episode is on, I like the idea of recording a film and having poxy adverts inbetween, I like the idea of the tape jamming and having rolls of film coming out of the player, I like the idea of having a whole wall dedicated to my video collection because they are so bulky, I like the idea of the wife recording over MOTD and telling me I should have taken the tab out...........
