Page 1 of DTS or Dolby Digital

Does anyone have an idea what the main difference`s are between the two and also which they would prefer? Would the quality be better for DTS? Would I need addtional speakers? etc.

As I`m trying to set up home cinema and looking to buy the Yamaha DSP-A5 and Mission speakers probably from the M70 series. Test driving these at Richersounds next Monday.

DTS gives a superior sound, if you have the kit.

I would prefer DTS, if I could afford all the kit!

You wont need any extra speakers but you will need a DTS capable player and amp/reciever. Yup.

I have tried various DVDs with both DD and DTS. The difference is not that great. You have to switch from one to the other to hear the difference. Most amp will decode DTS now, so don`t pay too much more for DTS.

I`ve got a Himage 2290 feeding into a Sherwood 6106 amp. I`m cheating with the centre speaker, though; I use the mixdown output to drive the TV speakers instead of having a separate centre (that`s only until I can afford a decent centre ;-)

This works very well on a DD5.1 soundtrack, but DTS doesn`t output through the mixdown, so I can`t use it until I get a dedicated centre.

Kind of depends on what you`re listening to it on.

DTS is much better (certainly when it`s full bitrate is used) - BUT if you`re just listening through your TV or something you`ll probably never notice the difference - throw it at a grand`s worth of hifi and the difference is between "ooh" and "HOLY s***!" - amply demonstrated by the THX introduction on the T2:UE.

The A5 decodes DTS so there`s no worry - most decoders do now, and you won`t require any extra speakers. jsut look out for the wierd volume differences - the tracks have a much larger dynamic range (the difference between the quietest possible sound and the largest) so you have to turn it up/down until dialogue sounds right when switching from Dolby Digital.

Basically DTS Dgital theatre sound as it is also known is in fact a better audio format as it uses less compression than its rival dolby digital therefore a better sound field and dynamic range is achieved to set up a dts 5.1 system you will need 5 speakers and a subwoofer for maximum enjoyment.
