*NEW* Website Promotion HELP PLEASE !! (for all you webmasters out there!)

JamieM (Competent) posted this on Friday, 23rd January 2004, 13:00

Hi all.

I am in need of help from all you internet savvy people and webmasters out there. I have just launched my business to now also trade via the World Wide Web, but am completely lost as to how to go about promoting it through the internet.

Does anyone know of any sources out there that will allow me to `get started` in gaining awareness of my business` site? The obvious routes are signing up to Google and Yahoo (thats about the extent of my knowledge), but are there any other successful means (tips `n tricks) to advertise my site (preferably free)?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I am completely new to this game, and require a helping hand!

Cheers, Jamie.

Get yourself registered with DMOZ (The open directory project) www.dmoz.org

Logon to www.webmasterworld.com and read everything you can there.

Sign up to overture, addwords and Espotting for PPC thingies.

Submit yourself to sites that do directories relevant to your line of business.

Hope that google indexes your site.

Thank you kindly for this - its appreciated. I have been looking at PromotionWorld.com. They seem to have a lot of good advice. I will also check out the sites you have suggested (Webmasterworld sounds like a similar thing).

Regarding the thread in the Trading Forum, I was not aware that links to websites were not allowed, and have requested it now be deleted.

Thanks again Craig

Hi, I used to run an eBusiness and went through all this.

I agree with one of the other posters that eSpotting and Overture are very good value if you have keywords that are not that common. If they are popular you get a high cost per click-through.

A lot of the search engines now charge to get in their index. I found the quickest, best value method was to get onto Inktomi who fed lots of the other engines. USD39 for a year is pretty good value. Try it at

The other thing to do is optimise the use of header tags and your page content. Make sure your tags match ythe words in your web pages. A good site to test the quality of your tags/pages is

It`s a bit of a black art.

Finally, Google used to rate you by how many sites linked to your site. Search the web for sites that are relavent to you but not competitiors and swap links.

Hope this helps

Great stuff! Thank you all.

I`ve tried the meta-tag checking site, and it appears that the tag words and description etc on my site are all in the green. Also the tags seem to match to my main page wording quite succesfully - it was rated as `Very Good`.

But does anyone have advice (and possibly a direct url link) to listing a site on Google? I am probably being blind here, but I can`t seem to find a general "add your site" link on this search engine; only payment options for various schemes I don`t want. Help!

Thanks again for the tips :-)
