Got a job interview, what should I do with my current job?
Right, I'm in a little bit of a tricky situation and was wondering what you would do if you were in my shoes…
I'm currently working in a hospital in an administration job. This is rather basic work, answering calls, date entry, etc… I have I.T. qualifications including a HNC and advanced GNVQ (both at distinction level), therefore I obviously want a career in computing. After months of searching nowhere accepted me (due to lack of experience) so I took the administration job.
I have been in this job since September but last moth applied for a job in the hospitals I.T. department in a technical job that pays an extra £4k+ a year and is right up my street career wise. The other day I was offered an interview for next month.
Now the problem is I haven't been in my job too long. How should I go about letting people know about the interview? I would like my manager to know because
a) They will write to/ring her for a reference, it's far better the news coming from me than them.
b) In my organisation I should get time off to go for the interview by my manager.
Do you think it is the right move letting my manager know?
She knows I'm after an IT job. What should I do about my colleagues I work with? We work well as a team and I worry this may be damaged if they think I want to leave - which isn't the case as I'm happy where I am at the moment.
Thanks in advance!

RE: Got a job interview, what should I do with my current job?
i`d just come clean with them, let them know the situation and that you are happy where you are but want this career. if they are decent people they will understand, however if you do it behind there backs you will lose any trust you had.
hope this helps

Do not, repeat do not tell your current manager where this current job can be shoved, just in case. ;)

I would totally agree with Mark, Do not tell anyone about the interview untill you have the new job in writting, then you can hand in your notice.
You can go for the interview during an assumed dental visit.
RE: Got a job interview, what should I do with my current job?
collin, i don`t think you read mark`s post correctly.
also, remember the job is interdepertmental, so they will find out anyway so in this case honesty is the best policy imho :D

The fact that you wont being "leaving" may stand you in good stead & they will have a directline to the God of IT that you will be.
Its amazing how many users think they can call you direct instead of going through proper channels.
Be upfront, say you saw the internal post & applied for it.
I had a hospital job verbally offered to me after the interview, my current employers told me at the time I had a interview (I hadnt received the letter about it), when they received a reference request (despite specifing otherwise). The post was then cancelled due to budget constraints. That caused a few glitches at work.

RE: Got a job interview, what should I do with my current job?
1) Never try to conceal job hunting from your current colleagues, and least of all from your boss.
2) You never know when you might need a good word or perhaps another job from them.
3) Always leave them smiling.

RE: Got a job interview, what should I do with my current job?
Hang on a second guys, I would never tell my employers that I was going for another job. It`s not your job to let them know after all.
I can see what you are all saying about it being an internal move but that`s not the point is it? The whole point is that YOU are trying to further YOUR career - not make things as nice as possible for the team you work on....as valiant as that sounds.
Maybe in this case tell your boss but don`t feel that you need to tell your team - after all, would they be bothered about you if they were going for a higher paid job? I think the answer is "no".
I`m sure that everyone will cut me down for saying this (due to the nice temperament of the regulars on here) but this is about YOUR life and you can generally guarantee that no-one is going to help you but yourself with regards your career.......you never know, you might tell someone else about the position and next thing you know you`ve lost the job to them!!
Just IMHO guys - please feel free to rip me apart! :D

and with that attitude no-one would help you, so maybe you should bear that in mind :D

RE: Got a job interview, what should I do with my current job?
Ogster, I have found, in my experience so far, that no-one is very likely to help you anyway....I mean, if you`re heading for a job that will enable you to have a better quality of life etc then what does that matter to the people you work with?
My point is that, by letting people you work with know your intentions, you may well be shooting yourself in the foot - especially if the "boss" gets to hear of it.
I stand by my statement - never let anyone know what you`re up to - it`s your business no-one elses!
I do however appreciate that this post was originally about an "internal" move but even so, only let the bare minimum know about it....you don`t know who`s there ready to stitch you up!
Rob
**edit** - Ogster, I was supposed to add a couple of :D :D as I didn`t mean it to sound "I`m right - you`re wrong"!! We are, after all, people who have had many different experiences - I`m going on mine and also advice that my Father gave me when I started work for the first time........he`s never been wrong about anything in my 28 years because he knows everything! :/
