Widescreen Telly - What to look out for ?

Kind of DVD related........

I`m buying a WS 32" telly soon, I only have around 600 notes to spend so it will be limited to the budget end of the market, so far I have found Sanyo and Thomson within this price range (including stands).

What do I need to know and possibly test before buying ? I want to eliminate as much as possible the letterbox look I currently get on my 28" normal telly ! I have an LG 3200e which allows you to choose 4:3 or 16:1 (think thats right) SO would the WS telly have setting`s that I can choose plus the setting on the DVD player to have the smallest black border top and bottom possible, what settings do I need to use on both to obtain the best picture ? I will only be using R2 disks (as the sodding hack doesn`t work!!)

Any guidance would be appreciated :-)

most movies available on DVD come in 2.35:1 ratio which means they will have borders on a 16:9 TV.

These borders can be reduced by switching the TV to 16:9L mode(zoom) but this usually effects the picture definition unless the transfer is anamorphic.

Try and get a TV you know has a panny tube(does have to be a panny to have a panny tube as they are considered the most reliable.

it may be a good idea to know in advance if it has tilt control in either the standard or service menu as 32" WS suffer more from magnetic problems then 28"`s.

I have a Sharp 32" widescreen TV. I have Dolby pro-logic on it and you can pick them up for a touch over £700.00. Im sure if you went for the Nicam version it would be in your price range. Its far better than the other 2 you mentioned, with 5 adjustable ratio options. It has tonnes of features including split screen text, TV guide button, lots of ways to adjust the sound and picture quality.
Home entertainment gave it a great review, check www.dealtime.co.uk for the best prices in the UK.
