Car Windscreen Condensation Problem...Any suggestions?

Oakland_Raider (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 27th November 2003, 23:48

Over the past few days, i have been getting a massive amount of condensation on the inside of my front windscreen. Not just in the morning either. Its been there at lunchtime and in the evening.Practically dripping off the glass.Never had it before on the car and its been in some very cold temperatures in the past. Any suggestions as to what may be causing it and how to cure it? Thanks!

The inside of the car is probably much damper than it should be normally. Worth checking the carpet.
Could be the car is letting in water around the doors or through floor/wheel arches. When this dries out it will cause alot of condensation in the car if left with the windows shut.

Louis

It could be one of 3 things

1) check under the bonnet where the water drains off the windscreen to see if the drain plug is blocked by debris and water is pooling

2) the heater maxtrix which is citted usually in the middle under the dash is leaking

3) the windscreen which is bonded to the car, the sealant is broken and letting in water, which means you will need to speak to a windscreen specialist

Have to agree with kebabheads 3 points, easiest way to check point 2 is to keep an eye on the water level in you expansion tank under the bonnet.

I had the same problem on a Clio we used to have, the window was completely saturated, found out the leak was a tiny hole in the engine bay wall, fitted a small screw into it and job done.

Other popular places are door/boot rubbers no longer meeting the door, can be tapped back into place with a hammer and lump of wood. The Aerial mount leaking, take it off, clean base and re-fit using some silicone sealant. Hole in car floor, but unlikely.

It is usualy the drainage in the engine bay blocked with leaves so the water builds up and runs into the car through the cabing fan.

I found our leak by running the hose pipe all over the car with my brother sat in there feeling for damp areas and listening for the water running in, didn`t take to long to find the cause but took weeks to dry the car out though :/

Had to leave the windows wide open on every dry day.

All the best

Another way of finding point 2 is you often get a p***y smell in the car if the heater matrix is leaking or at least you do if you have antifreeze in the rad .

Does your car have one of those switches/sliders that determines whether or not
the air is recycled? If so switch it to fresh air setting not recycle.

I agree....the most common problem on a car less than a few years old is likely to be lack of ventilation. Make sure you have fresh air coming in through the heater not recyled and make sure you have plenty of air coming in - switch the blower on.

Also, to help clear the problem, drive around for a few days with the air con on (if you have it), Air con dries the air out as it comes into the car.
