The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...

chewie (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 16th October 2003, 15:49

Saw this today.

Can`t say I was expecting much as the trailers made it look sh*te, but I thought it was alright. Not as good as the source material promised, but not as bad as it could have been. Connery was alright, although too many of his one-liners were dead on arrival. The rest of the "League" were quite entertaining though, especially Dr Jeckyll (sp?) and Mr Hyde.

Don`t have much more to say, other than it`s a slightly above average adventure flick that can be enjoyed on a purely popcorn level.

Anyone else seen it and what did you think?

Each to their own, but i thought the cgi for Mr Hyde looked like it had been done about 20 years ago, not too impressed with the film either :( Could and should have been a lot better.

SteveBanana is right, I wasn`t sure and couldn`t be arsed to check ;)

And Sonylover, I agree that it should have been better, but I found it to be alright the way it is. And Mr Hyde was real in most shots, very little CGI was used except in the end battle and some jumping scenes ;)

Yeah I thought it was alright too, nothing special and not one I`ll be looking to buy on DVD. I think the CGI can be excused by the fact that the film had a very comic book look to it, and thus some of the characters looked a little cartoony as well (ie. Mr. Hyde).

Still, the premise of the film is very interesting, but maybe the story could`ve done with a little more work. I thought the baddie was a bit rubbish, and really didn`t put up much of a fight. On a whole though, not that bad - could`ve been far worse.

I actually preferred the cgi of Hyde to that of the Hulk (maybe Alan Moore was pointing out the historical precedent there, and having a swipe at Stan Lee?). I also loved how he linked so many things from the period, e.g. Mr Hyde as the murderer in the Rue Morgue, Moriarty as M, head of a prototype secret service (and then ex Bond Connery gets the lead part), and also endowing Dorian Gray with an altogether different kind of immortality than Wilde probably had in mind.
I thought Nemo`s car was pushing it a bit though :)
I had been putting off buying the graphic novel, but if the film is anything to judge by the book is probably even better.
